Sometimes, David just needed space. If he couldn’t shut off the thoughts of his people, or if he’d needed to heal someone’s mind, give them good vibes or peace and tranquillity (take take take, that’s all they do. They feed off us. Just like Farouk fed on us --) and it tired him out, then he left them for a while. He never had any plans when he left, and he never told them he was going, or he’d have needed to hear their whines of Don’t go, Daddy and When will you be back, Daddy? So, he always left without telling them, and he came back when he wanted. They were good girls and boys. They wouldn’t abandon him if he went away for a while.
He went outside the city this time, beyond the light pollution and the noise of their thoughts and cars and the sounds that had bothered him his whole life. But he didn’t go just to get away from it all. He was following a sense, an aura. Someone powerful. And when he found her, he didn’t say anything. He didn’t even approach her. She had to know he’d followed her out here, but he wanted her to realise he wasn’t a threat. So he just looked up at the stars, shining so brightly now they were out here, and listened.
The stars still spoke to him. Half-whispered words, secrets, soft voices he could barely make out. He couldn’t tell if it was just the voices of people’s thoughts in the city, still leaking out even though he was trying to shut them off, or if it was the stars themselves, like he used to believe back when he thought he was sick, before he knew he had powers. After a moment, he said, in a soft voice, “It’s beautiful out here, isn’t it? Away from all that noise.”
