Traveling Some Ways Away (2017)

I loved the original ghostbusters. It's a classic. I don't think any kind of remake will really hold a candle to the original. Now this remake....actually doesn't suck.

The characters are interesting and their chemistry is good. Kate McKinnon is a godsend--love her to death in this movie. I do find problems in the movie's execution and lack of polish at some points. Joke delivery does feel a little awkward in certain parts.

Then the antagonist, while a decent caricature for the kind of men that would hate on this movie from the onset of learning about the all-female cast, is still a rather weak drive for the plot. He is nowhere near as interesting as Gozer in the original even if the latter received roughly a third of the screen time of the former. The joke of making fun of complicated Lovecraftian horror tropes in the original Ghostbusters is completely lacking here and that's a little disappointing. Honestly, Seeing these characters interact was greater fun than seeing them resolve the conflict in Act 3.

Though I do admit the addition of action elements here was fun and I did get a good deal of satisfaction and enjoyment in watching them fight off ghosts.

Now if the trailer is giving you second thoughts about seeing this movie then please note that those are not at all representative of the final product. Think of the relationship between the trailer and the movie as the reverse of that of Prometheus.

It's not a great movie nor is it terrible or even mediocre, but it's decent and not a waste of your money and time.

I’m really getting into 80s pop music again. There’s just something about the beats and synthesizers that really make the music appealing. The glitz and flash just really appeal to me. I wish I could put exactly why I like the music into words, but I can’t. I just simply love it.

EDIT: Also, thank you to everyone that’s ever made an 80s themed Spotify playlist. I am currently enjoying lots of those haha. 80s GIFs also make appropriate reaction GIFs in retrospect

I'm curious how the gaming community is like here in tumblr. Any good gaming blogs I can follow that gives good industry analysis on games or offers insight on what makes for a compelling game overall? Basically I'm asking for the kind of content that Extra Credits or Supper BunnyHop or TotalBiscuit make. I'm looking for tumblr primarily becausw of the interactive aspect of communities here :)

I never played any of those old school CRPGS like Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment, and the old Fallout games. I was really curious as to what they were like and so I bought the first one that went on sale. Well I didn’t buy any of the game I just mentioned. I got a lesser known one called Arcanum. All I knew about the game was that it had steampunk setting, which I liked, and a branching storyline that promoted different styles of play. I had just finished KOTOR I & II and Fallout 3 at the time so I was happy to get more of the latter.

My first impression of the game was that it looked old, very old. It also played old. Interacting with the outdated UI was troublesome and there were no mods that addressed the issue. Many of the conveniences I was used to in more modern games were mostly absent. Hotkeying abilities and items was almost a chore. Combat at the very start of the game was near impossible for most characters because melee was out of the option because you could not take enough hits to duke it out with enemies and guns for early characters almost always missed. I was so lost and helpless for much of the early game.

Yet I pressed on with the game because I was told by people on the internet that the game gets better later on. It’s very much a slow burner, but once the ball gets rolling you’ll love it. That was their promise to prospective players. And….they were right. Thank you internet, I ended up playing the game for months to complete every sidequest before I finished the main storyline.

Yes, combat kinda sucked, but what made the game so engaging was its non-combat. Dialogue trees branched in ways it never did in other games I had played before. My character eventually reached a point where she could talk her way out of most predicaments. When she could not I could just sneak around and steal keys to escape trying situations. I felt like the sneaky rogue I loved playing in RPGs. Then there was the soundtrack. It was wonderful. The harmonic sounds of a string quartet suited the game’s setting perfectly. Each city felt so distinct from the others with the music and the art. The pre-rendered backgrounds made most locations seem unique and interesting.

Then of course, the setting and story got me hooked. I loved watched industrial capitalism play out with the Tolkein races. Magic and tech clashed in the most interesting ways. The lore was engaging. Discovering the world’s lore wasn’t a chore nor was it a burden you had to endure to understand the game’s main storyline. It was all so fun to explore the game in its entirety. Arcanum was my go-to game for months.

Of course the game’s archaic features, like the combat, never really went away. Yet I could bear with that fact and just enjoy the game’s best parts. I was happy with it. Because of my experiences in Arcanum I could enjoy future RPGS and even other games with a greater appreciation for how the medium has evolved. Now if Pillars of Eternity could just go on sale that would be great.

Oh man… I remember this game. Bought it when it came out and hated it.  Good to know it gets better eventually.  Maybe if I dig out the CD again I’ll give it another shot.

It might be better to get the GOG version. You'll go through less hoops getting that version to work with modern systems :)

Okay, listen up everyone

this is an important PSA for people born with vaginas. and it is important for people born with penises too because they should learn these things too

SEX ISN’T SUPPOSED TO HURT. (more specifically I mean vaginal penetration isn’t supposed to hurt.)

FORGET ALL THE LIES YOU LEARNED IN HEALTH CLASS.

NO, your vagina isn’t too small and NO, the reason you can’t insert tampons/fingers into your vagina without experiencing pain isn’t because you are a virgin.

If you can’t insert fingers and/or tampons into your vagina without it hurting then a penis sure as hell isn’t going to be any different.

If you try to have someone penetrate you with their penis it causes you great pain THEN STOP IMMEDIATELY. CONTINUING WILL ONLY CAUSE MORE PAIN AND MAKE IT WORSE. (And people with penises, don’t force your penis in if your partner is in pain!)

What you have is called “Vaginismus”– painful spasmodic contraction of the vagina in response to physical contact or pressure (especially in sexual intercourse).

Basically meaning your muscles tense up and make penetration impossible and extremely painful. Bet you didn’t learn that in health class, huh? Because health class is fucking useless. 

Here’s an image to show you what happens–

See you black lumps? That’s your muscles tensing up and fighting against penetration. And see the lightning bolts? That symbolizes the INTENSE PAIN. This muscle response is involuntary and won’t stop no matter how aroused or relaxed you are.  

And NO, this is not something that only happens to people with a history of sexual abuse. 2 in every 1000 people with vaginas have Vaginismus and that does not include the ones that go undocumented. Most people never seek help because they are embarrassed/shamed and/or think that it is normal.

BUT DON’T FRET. Vaginismus is completely “curable.” People who seek treatment have a high success rate although it may take a few weeks or sometimes years. Simply hoping for the problem to fix itself or go away will NOT work. And definitely, DEFINITELY, do NOT force yourself to have intercourse hoping that will fix it. IT WILL MAKE IT WORSE. 

So if you are a virgin and think you may have Vaginismus, go seek help BEFORE you have sex so that your first time isn’t a painful experience. And if you’ve attempted sex before and have been unsuccessful then go and get help so that you can finally enjoy vaginal penetration! :)

If I’ve missed any important fact and you want to add to this post, feel free to reblog and add more information about Vaginismus! I’m sick and tired of people not being aware of this condition and people living their lives in pain!

And please reblog this and spread if like wildfire so that people suffering from this condition can know that they are not alone and that they don’t have to live their whole lives in pain.

It wasn’t until years after I got better that I found out this was what I had. My Gyn never told me this was a condition, or gave me any advice when I would get upset in the office, because it hurt so much and I didn’t know why. I felt very worthless, not being able to have sex, even though my boyfriend was never mean about it. No one I ever mentioned it to had ever heard of or experienced something similar. They would go “oh well he must have liked that it was tight haha” like, no my boyfriend didn’t like that I was depressed and struggling with this issue that affected my self worth so badly, or that every sexual encounter involved me crying. We had a good, consensual sex life and then suddenly I couldn’t anymore, and I didn’t know why. To see this issue get some recognition and see other people have dealt with the same thing is meaningful to me.

My High School here in the Philippines taught us that abstinence was the only way to go. I had to learn everything about sex education from the internet. Thank God for people like Laci Green or Dr. Doe making sex education free and available online
