CONFLUENCE

takingpartwest is evolving … into Confluence a creative collaboration between PLANED, spacetocreate, iDeA Architects, Pembrokeshire County Council and Transition Haverfordwest, which aims to devise and test new and imaginative ways of working in Haverfordwest that will bring the community together to inspire and shape the process of urban planning, design and regeneration.

One of only 12 successful bids to the Arts Council of Wales' Ideas, People and Places programme, the new partnership will use its phase 1 funding to work up a large scale bid for a 3 year programme focussed on regenerating the town starting with the town's relationship with the river.

The new project is in part built on the success of takingpartwest, so thank you to everyone who took part over the last three years. We look forward to working with you again on this exciting new project as well as engaging with many new people as the project begins to take shape.

MOVING STORIES

We are currently working on Moving stories a series of digital media projects, which form part of "Stronger Communities; Better Services"- a Big Lottery funded portfolio project to strengthen the voice of local people in the planning of services in Pembrokeshire.

MIRROR'S IMAGE OPENS UP

On Saturday July 6th between 12.30 and 3pm the young Artists and their mentor will be opening up their shop at Unit 3 Riverside Arcade (opposite Wilkinsons) to allow visitors to take a closer look at the elements that make up the installation and will be happy to talk about their work and what inspired them to make it.

This new work will create a memorable and inspirational finale to Popupwest, which over the last five months has showcased the talents of more than 30 young Artists in nine installations that will have been seen by thousands of residents and visitors to the town.

The installation is the second in a series of three that make up popupwest summer season which will continue in Unit 3 Riverside Shopping Centre through to the middle of July.

Frustrated by the media's portrayal of young people, and the consequent effect that has had on their own community's attitude, a group of young people set out to make a mini documentary about their youth club.

Filmed at the Garth Youth and Community Project 'The Hive' Haverfordwest over the winter of 2012/13

Funded by the Arts Council of Wales and the European Social Fund through Reach the Heights - a Welsh Government initiative aimed at reducing the number of young people in Wales aged 11 – 19 years who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), or at risk of being so.

Over the river, Chrissy Rees’ powerful recreation of Smaug the Dragon’s encounter with Bilbo the Hobbit, brings the work of Tolkien off the page and into Unit 11 of the Riverside Arcade in Haverfordwest. HAPUS DEWI SANT PAWB !

On a perfect evening, the town turned out in huge numbers to take part in the parade with hundreds of handmade candle lit lanterns. Accompanied by Peter Stacey on the Welsh Bagpipes, the lantern carriers paraded behind a giant illuminated Dragon made by Community Artists, Toby Downing, Guy Norman and Pip Lewis with the help of a fantastic team of volunteers.

Returning to the field, after it's magical journey winding along the river and through the medieval streets of Haverfordwest, the Dragon breathed fire into a fire-drawing of daffodils, the national symbol of Wales, celebrating the end of winter and marking St David's Day in an unforgettable way.

Thank you to everyone who made it such a great success...all the volunteers, stewards, dragon bearers, food providers and community police.

POP UP IS HERE

Unit 3 in the Riverside Shopping Centre is showcasing “Obsessive Reality” a piece of work by Arthur Brooker and Steffi Campbell, who are both currently studying on the part-time BA (Hons) Sculpture Course at Trinity College Carmarthen. During the Project they have been working with the support of Toby Downing, Kinetic Artist who is based in St Dogmaels.

Unit 11, Riverside Arcade is hosting “A walk in the Park” a piece of work made by Pembrokeshire Young Carers, who spent a creative day at Druidstone Haven in early January with National Park Ranger, Hayley Barrett and Guy Norman, from spacetocreate community arts, and Charlotte Phillips and Keren Rees from Action for Children. FOLLOW THE DRAGON

Come along and make a lantern for the St Davids Day Lantern Parade on Friday 1st March 2013. Four free community workshops are taking place at the Picton Centre in the morning and afternoon on Wednesday 13th and Saturday 23rd February.

On the night of the parade, Transition Haverfordwest in partnership with Trehale Farm will be providing refreshments for sale including sausages and burgers, cakes and hot and cold drinks

The project is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the Milford Haven Port Authority.
