Recently it feels like I can’t take a minute just to breath..
because somewhere there are buildings burning and bodies left unburied, somewhere someone has lost all they own, somewhere my friends and loves are also hurting, somewhere another hammer falls and drives our hopes back down. I don’t feel the blows now. I’m automated a black hole of a person too safe and too cushy to be endangered but too weak to go through unharmed.
but the black hole person doesn’t change or learn or grow, and the black hole person will only continue eating everything, in total darkness.
It takes letting go. It takes letting the world just be. A minute to stop, to take note.
Even if I absorb all light into a cavity where no matter can escape.
Somewhere there are candles, somewhere lovers lie coiled fast asleep on a foldout couch. Somewhere has spiced wine and sandalwood. There is laughter there- a kitchen anointed with the warm scent of cinnamon, and frying oil.
Light is not a felled tree unheard, it exists even when our eyes are closed. Light will travel until our galaxy is an anecdote on some new space-faring people’s tongue. Even if my mind is tar and my bones call for the earth, there is still a sun and stars. We don’t matter to light’s span of time.
Somewhere shines a garish neon Santa, somewhere smells like phosphorus and matchsticks. There is a way to let the light get in, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t. Somewhere there is Hopelessness, somewhere there is hope. They exist simultaneously with equal weight, a duality of waves and particles
If I am reduced to nothing but a pair of lungs and breathing. The world will still be terrible and the world will still be kind.
All I can hope is when I’m ready; somewhere,
some light will find me; and offer:
-a chair,
-a candle,
-a cup of wine,
and let me come in from the cold.
You bleed rich verse through your fingertips, Your heart is still beating, my dear, dear friend, Put your fingers to your wrist. Feel the tremor there? It is small and timorous too. Feel yourself living. You are built on the viscous red of cinnabar clay. Your blood has coursed through rivers and crossed the world. Your blood has survived the all the trials of your ancestors to bring you here; to this weird little woodland town to start your own adventure. Take a deep breath of air, remember the blood, remember your journey, this is but a point on your grander arc. You are not powerless. Create, feel, grow, effervesce and shine. Inside, there lives a multiverse. You are all the makings of a revolution: Girl, words, love and a tinderbox brain. While you’re hurting now someone else curls around your words for strength. You are a writer and a woman, both fearfully made. There are opportunities at your keyboard. They don’t just burn books for warmth.
New Hampshire (#1 in Love Notes for a Rebellion, a series of little vent poems I wrote for friends)
Travel across the most special places in the world.
She fell in love with the stars just like any person would fall in love with a place, a person, or a memory. The stars were steady each day, night, and season. She knew where to find every constellation at night. I think that’s part of the reason she was in love with them. They were the one constant thing in her life. The one thing she could count on.
