I have this really high priority on happiness and finding something to be happy about.
Guarding your heart and protecting your dignity are a little bit more important than clarifying the emotions of someone who’s only texting you back three words. I’ve learned that from trying to figure out people who don’t deserve to be figured out.
My ultimate goal is to end up being happy. Most of the time.
I want to love you, but I don’t know how.
I was enchanted to meet you…
I’d be in my bedroom, and I’d think to myself, when I was twelve, ‘if I can just write songs, if I can just get a record deal, if I could just put out an album, I swear I’d be happy; I wouldn’t need anything else,’ and I think then, you grow up and you realize that the same things you deal with in your childhood affect you when you are a grown up as well. But you know, little kid, little problems; big kid, big problems.
“The most abnormal part of my life is having sort of crowds forming everywhere you go, and just everywhere. So that starts happening, and then you have to take security everywhere you go. All of a sudden you realize that you haven’t been alone, truly, for five years.”
I watch us go round and round each time…

“I think that a trick for confidence when you’re not feeling confident is to throw your shoulders back and be friendly to people. I think that sometimes when you look uncomfortable or you feel like you’re being shy, people can see that as unfriendly. I think the easiest thing to do when you’re not feeling confident is just act confident until you are again.”
“I think one thing I would pass on to my kids, or my friends, or anyone who asked for advice, I think I would say, you know ‘grow up one year at a time’. That’s something I’m so glad I did. I had weird circumstances around my life, and, like, a magnifying glass on everything I do, but still, sixteen to twenty-two, I feel like I’ve been those ages every year, figuring things out, and not needing to be twenty-five that whole time.”
