Hope you enjoy this episode. The Pandemic of 1918 is something we hear of a lot recently and that may be due to the new Pandemic called Coronavirus of 2019 or COVID-19 for short. The Pandemic is often compared to the recent pandemic and here in this episode, we explore the ins and outs of the Spanish Flu and how it compares to now. The Pandemic from 1918 didn't just have only one wave but actually 4. Spaning from 1918 (or before that according to some) to the 1920s The Spanish Flu was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic caused by the H1N1 influenza A virus. Lasting from February 1918 to April 1920, it infected 500 million people–about a third of the world's population at the time–in four successive waves. The death toll is typically estimated to have been somewhere between 17 million and 50 million, making it one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. The Crew of Sergeant Trifonov's ZiS-3 gun at lunch on the outskirts of Berlin April 1945 By u/Crecer13 on r/ww2 The 76-mm divisional gun M1942 (ZiS-3) (Russian: 76-мм дивизионная пушка обр. 1942 г. (ЗиС-3)) was a Soviet 76.2 mm divisional field gun used during World War II. ZiS was a factory designation and stood for Zavod imeni Stalina ("factory named after Stalin"), the honorific title of Artillery Factory No. 92, which first constructed this gun. The ZiS-3 was a combination of the light carriage from the 57 mm ZiS-2 anti-tank gun and a powerful 76.2 mm barrel from the previous divisional field gun F-22USV. Combat experience showed the superiority of ZiS-3 over all other types of divisional level field guns. This allowed the ZiS-3 to be presented to a group of state authorities headed by Joseph Stalin and thus obtain all needed approval. After the demonstration was over Stalin said: "This gun is a masterpiece of artillery systems design." There was a five-day official state test run in February 1942. ...into the ovens. Along the way, he acquired two stunned prisoners, one an officer, and returned to his own lines with a Japanese soldier under each arm. There were 44 Japanese dead in the bakery area, many, if not most, fallen to Harman’s lone attack. He was not finished. The next day he went alone after Japanese digging in a mere 50 yards from his position. As the section Bren-gunner gave him covering fire, Harman closed with the enemy, shooting four of the Japanese and killing a fifth with his bayonet. Standing erect in the open, Harman walked back toward his own position, as his men shouted to him to run. Harman refused, perhaps because he would not run from the enemy, or maybe because he was simply too tired to do so. In any case, he was shot down and mortally wounded before he reached safety. His men pulled him into their position and heard his last words. “I got the lot,” said Harman, “It was worth it.” He was dead in five minutes.” “Indeed, they did not fear death. I remember reading their families even held their funerals before they even traveled to war. The recounts of Kohima are truly devastating.” “Here is one from a veteran of the battle: The veteran, who served in a Special Forces unit in Norway before going to the Far East with the Royal Berkshire Regiment, says: “I dreamt about it for quite a long time after I came out of the army. I used to sweat like a pig just talking about it.” He continues: “You were stepping over bodies all over the place, just lying around, and the smell alone made you feel sick...you did everything in your trousers that you could think of, that’s crude but it’s true. I don’t care what anybody says, you did. When, on 18 April, the relief forces of the British 2nd Division arrived, Richards’s defensive perimeter was reduced to a shell-shattered area only 350 meters square.” “And just to the east, the 10,000 Chindits were enough of a diversion to draw enough Japanese troops from Kohima and Imphal. According to some histories, this helped to defeat the Japanese.” “Also, the Chindits cut off the food supply to the Japanese during both battles. So most of them ended up dying from starvation. Without the Chindits, the Japanese would have taken Kohima and could have marched on forward to Kolkata and potentially swept through India as they did in Malaya, Singapore, and Burma.” “There were 3 recipients of the Victoria Cross during this battle. This is one of them, Lance Corporal John Harman of the West Kents, singlehandedly attacked a Japanese machine-gun position, destroyed the gun’s crew with a grenade, and brought the gun back to his own lines. He then pushed on into a building, which contained huge bread ovens. Harman discovered that the ovens were full of Japanese, so he ran back for a box of grenades.
