Operation Tap: TECHNIQUE TUESDAY, JUNE 11TH, 2019
Performed by: Dominique Kelley, Mandy Moore, and Melinda Sullivan
Number: “A Lovely Night”
Choreographer: Mandy Moore
Style: Tap
From: USA Today (2017)
For all you lovelies who loved la la land as much as I did.
I was thrilled to see tap in the movie!! Especially from two people who didn't know tap before hand (at least not to my knowledge anyway). The steps aren't too complicated, so you might have picked some up from the movie, but here's a break down from the wonderful Mandy Moore.
Enjoy! Also if you want to learn it, film it, and send it my way, I would be thrilled because y'all are great and this movie was lovely.
Finally got back into the studio again. Man have I missed this. I hope y'all practices and performances are going swimmingly!!! Tag us in your videos and photos and gifs and all that Jazz! I love getting to learn from you guys and your amaaaazing talent!! Love from Texas! -Elizabeth
HEY HEY HEY GUESS WHAT DAY IT IS???
INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY!!! So send us your videos and pictures alike, we want to see how you spend your international dance day, and maybe just maybe, I'll post a video of me tap dancing. We'll see.
“I liked tap, because I liked hearing the results of my movements.” -Suzanne Farrell
10 Reasons Why Tap Dancing is Your Life
1.Constantly going over choreography You may have just learned a quick 32 count piece for a random tap class, but rest assured that routine is staying in your head for months.
2. Tapping your feet in quiet areas It’s one thing to tap your pencil, but when you’re the only one doing shuffles and Shirley temples in a quiet area, you’re bound to receive some stares…or glares.
3. Dancing on your toes
Yes. Pointe shoes aren’t the only ones that allow dancing on your toes. The only thing more freaky than jumping and landing on the toes of your tap shoes is the flexibility of your feet when it looks like your heels are about to hit your front taps.
4. Performing on floors that are obviously not meant for tap shoes We’ve all been there. Your studio is asked to do a small community performance and what luck, the floor you’re tapping is concrete. RIP taps.
5. Slipping like the floor is made of soap
Unless it’s specifically made for tap shoes, you’re most likely going to slip and slide at least once
6. Going through the movement but not actually making the sounds in group dances Of course I’m doing a wing even though I’m just jumping and flaying my legs out to the side. I’m at least creating THE ILLUSION of it.
7. Missing a sound No matter how good you fake it, your dance teacher will know if you fake a movement or miss a sound. “It’s four sounds and I only heard three.” It’s pure numbers at this point.
8. Tapping with your hands
Sometimes tapping your feet isn’t possible. The next best thing is your hands. Plant them face down and what do you know! They’re kind of like your feet.
9. Making up choreography to pretty much any 20s inspired songs (Rat pack anyone?)
Uh oh, is that Frank Sinatra playing? Someone grab me my tap shoes.
10. Getting lowkey annoyed when people want to try on your tap shoes to just stomp around in them
I don’t want to be mean and say no, but- OH MY GOSH! Are you seriously trying to tap on tiles right now?
Thinking about taking tap dancing lessons from one of our actors but I was hesitant because I thought tap shoes would be expensive. Guess what I found at Goodwill today for $6? #tapdance #dance #shoes #bargains
