For readers outside the US: Negative twenty in American degrees is -29 Celsius.

I grew up in Canada, and when it was -25 C or below, they wouldn’t let us go outside for recess at school.

Like, everyone had boots and ski mittens and snowpants and winter coats, but still - indoor recess on those days. Cause the risk of frostbite was bad enough to justify everyone spending their lunch break supervising a classroom full of rowdy children.

That kind of cold is viscerally hostile to the human body. Your instincts will scream at you to GO INSIDE. It’s an environment that’s fundamentally physiologically unsafe, and you can feel that.

In the context of that weather, this turnout is even more compelling.

More context: they’d closed school districts for the cold, even having done so in advance (though idk about college campuses). And as far I know, there were simultaneous protests across the state as well, not to mention the other protest of economic blackout/walkout.

It was a lot.

And yes, the gear can make the comfort, but extremities (toes and fingers) and the face are still difficult to keep warm for long especially if there’s wind coming in and stealing away the air your body had warmed up.

So yeah, even though they’re Winter People, it’s still impressive just how many turned out. That weather gives frostbite in minutes. I think it’s the same kind mountaineers face.

And if anyone’s wondering what they could do if their city or state is next especially if you’re disabled: that day had at least one live stream (not the kind that videoed random protestors) that shared info about what was happening in Minneapolis, how to be on the ground, and raised money for an immigrant org (I’m talking Leeja Miller’s); it was an economic blackout day (huddle inside and run errands before or after the day (if you need meds or something, you obviously shouldn’t be reprimanded for that)); connecting with your community and doing what you’re capable of (it’s ok if it’s not much); participating in smaller, easier events like the bring backs (buying the same thing with a group of people and all bringing it back to protest a company). Of course it helps to be somewhere that you’re able to hear about these things, and being disabled isn’t condusive for that.
