Thoughts on London Wall W1W
Carroll/Fletcher: How does this Wall compare to others that you've done?
Thomson & Craighead: We've seen less comment on news events and more day to day self-surveillance. In the last few days, there's been nothing about what's been happening in Egypt for example but LOTS on shopping, the weather, where cocktails are being drunk or where celebrities are being spotted. The coming and going of the commuting populations in and out of the vicinity is also palpable. On Sunday mornings in particular, you see the residents of the area much more visibly and they tend to be the brunching middle classes or wrecked and lovelorn teenagers back in bed after long nights out. C/F: What do you think the Wall says about the environs of the gallery / the poetry of Fitzrovia?
T&C: The updates we've been looking at here have been more overtly self-absorbed and apolitical than at previous times and places but that may be as much a reflection of a moment as it is a locale. C/F: Any favourite W1 Tweets?
T&C: For us the interest lies in the interaction between them all and how they amass to seem more meaningful and meaningless in different measures, but with that said here's an early almost haiku-like one we particularly remember: It smells like Florida in H&M & now I’m sad C/F: Where would you like your next Wall to be?
T&C: We're aiming to make a, 'Dundee Wall' next January for Dundee Contemporary Arts as part of our forthcoming show there, but more generally we're interested to make them in cities all around the world so that each performance becomes a component of a wider socio-historical archive.
