Scramble for Africa
Scramble for Africa was the invasion and colonization of African territory by Europeans during 1881-1914. The Berlin Conference is what started it all in 1884 because it regulated European colonization and trade in Africa. When Africa offered the western countries and open market in 1873, Europeans realized that income could really be generated in Africa with the cheap labor and limited competition. Europeans called Africa the ‘Dark Continent’ because it was unknown to them.
Was the Berlin conference really the beginning of this all? Is there other things that led to this? Did millions of African Americans have to be enslaved and killed to make a "civilized" society? I mean there could have been another way around this right? Couldn't they have just held a meeting and talked peacefully? Did the Europeans really believe that enslaving and killing Africans in their own country would help them gain control of Africa? Obviously the Europeans wanted change, but isn't the way they did it bad? Now that I think about it was the killing and torture of the Africans really worth it?
