Love when your personal life is giving you stress, like thanks my job didn’t have enough of that
me: hey look at this huge pile of work I need to get done...I better get on that
also me: or...even better idea...we can pinterest what we want our classroom theme to be next year
I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.

This Florida shooting is the first big school shooting since I became a teacher. It’s hitting extra hard.
Anyone have any book suggestions? They don’t have to be teaching related. Trying to take more time for myself.
Just so y’all know, I’m mutuals with a lot of you but this is my side blog so I can’t follow from here. If you ever want to know my main blog just ask!!!!
Can people send me pictures of their messy classrooms so I feel less bad about myself?
Teaching Problem #568
Am I actually sick or is my throat sore because I’ve been projecting my voice for 6 hours straight the past 5 days?
Around half my class either had or has had the stomach flu in the past week
What does your first day back from winter break usually look like?
How much academics do you do? How much do you focus on routines? Do you do anything fun instead of academic? I’m a first year teacher and I’m struggling to find the balance of that day.
Me trying to get through the last 2 days before winter break
When students keep trying to get my attention for something stupid
The hardest days are the days where I lose my patience. I raise my voice at a child, I got upset, etc. I know that I am a good teacher and a lot of my students have made growth and I have some students who will talk to me and no one else, but when I have days like this I feel like the worst teacher ever and like I'm ruining my kids.
Do you ever have those students who literally only respond and are successful when your a strict, mean teacher? Like I try positive reinforcements, being friendly, redirection, and it doesn't work. When I use my mean teacher voice they immediately change. I hate feeling like a mean teacher but it's literally the only thing they respond to. Like I want them to be successful...it's hard.
Like I'm all for common core standards and teaching the standards and I think they're super great and beneficial...but what I'm struggling with is when students can't add or subtract, which are like 1st and 2nd grade standards, how am I supposed to teach my 4th grade standard of multiplying four digit numbers? Like how do I even begin??
