Post-Mortem: The Binding of Isaac
After reading a post-mortem about the game The Binding of Isaac, the biggest thing I learned was going against the norm can actually be a great thing. I the article, the creator of the game claimed he made this game, not with the intention of it to succeed but actually of it to fail. He wanted to make a game that was edgy, against the normal game flow and something that represented his life in the way he views religion. In fact, many critics rated this game as blasphemous, but that didn’t stop him from finishing it. In the end, The Binding of Isaac became a hit on Steam and even began its own fan base. So the moral is, don’t be afraid to try something others may not like.
My three favorite games
I don't play a lot of video games, but the ones I do play seem to all have one of two themes: first person horror or racing games. The three I most enjoy playing are Super Mario Kart, Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox 360 and Amnesia: The Dark Descent on PC. I've made a list of hooks and core mechanics, along with a few other important factors for each game that I believe to be important when creating ones own video game. It goes as follows:
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario Kart's hooks, to me would be that it's a simple, fun racing game with interesting characters we have all come to know and love from the classic game Super Mario Bros. You also get to collect power ups and other items to boost ahead. It's an exciting competitive multiplayer game that's great for all ages. The mechanics are simple, consisting of a toggle stick and few buttons if on the game cube, and over all very basic controls. This game has been around for so long and been growing yearly for so long it has very few interface problems from what I can see. The game is intended for replay, very literally too because of its play back feature. Super Mario Kart has evolved considerably from its original format of basic coding and graphics to much more detailed scenery and game play. The designers have developed a more in depth and exciting interaction as the limits of technology have decreased. This game was produced almost 10 years after the original Super Mario Bros franchise set sail in 1983.
Left 4 Dead 2
The most thrilling part of Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) is the adrenaline rush you get from totally annihating a swarm of zombies coming for you and your team. That's the biggest hook for me. Though getting to increase your skill level of a first-person shooter and collecting more artillery is also a thrill. This game is fairly easy to grasp as well, depending on how well you are used to Xbox controls. It's mostly knowing what buttons to press for what sort of weapon and getting a hang of the toggle stick that allows you to look around 360 degrees. The only issues I've run into with the game are the few glitches you can get while in action, which is a little annoying at times. The most common I've run into is while you are low on health, your character can sometimes get stuck on the ground and then you're doomed. It's a linear game with a somewhat plot to the story, though basic. As you increase in levels, the playing fields get more difficult and become more and more latent with zombies of all kinds. But as you keep playing, your skill level will also increase and the rush just keeps going. L4D2 stemmed from the original L4D and was influenced by many earlier zombie survival games like DayZ.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
I love games with a great plot and an interesting story to tell, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent is definitely that kind of game. It's best hook though is the riddles you get to solve while playing the game to reveal what has happened to your character, Daniel. Full of disturbing monsters, complex riddles and a beautiful design, this game definitely is in my top 10. This first-person perspective game was made for the PC and has you use your mouse and key board to move and collect items. Being a fairly new Indy game, there are some bugs with the design but overall is well made, if playing the original game. A ton of people create their own custom maps which can be more buggy, but many are impressive. This is a linear game with a consistent story line and story development and different endings depending on what version you may be playing. As you continue playing, the riddles get harder, the maps more confusing, and the monsters even more frequent and terrifying.
