Yeah. It’s a crucial social and media engagement skill, but honestly it’s huge for mental health growth and self-awareness. Being able to recognise your triggers, consciously avoid them and then even when confronted being able to let go of the need to intervene and just step away… genuinely life changing stuff.

The thing about character design theory is I really think we shouldn’t just keep reinforcing our “this is what a sneaky and untrustworthy character looks like, this is what a threatening and intimidating character looks like, this is what an innocent character worth protecting looks like, this is what a smart and competent character looks like, this is what a man looks like vs what a woman looks like” conventions like they’re innate human wiring that we tap into scientifically and not like, heavily societal

yeah so in the late 19th- early 20th centuries, scientific racism and eugenics were in full force and it was widely believed that certain facial features were literally actually connected to things like criminal behavior, I've been reading about it

If you're going to take away kids' smartphones, then give them back the streets.
The fact that neither elected government representatives, nor "Industry Leaders," are even discussing that option leads me to suspect that they're less interested in child safety than in expanding their authoritarian reach.

Evan Edinger, an American ex-pat who's been living in Britain for the last 13 years, recently made a ~30 minute video about trying to use public transport in and around the New Jersey suburb where he grew up. He (as an able-bodied, relatively fit, young man) could make it work, even if a trip that would have taken an hour, tops, if he'd gone in his own car, took an entire day -- most of that waiting around for the next bus to arrive.
I watched his impromptu documentary, and saw something that would have been impossible for me... Because the buses tended to drop him off on the side of the road where there were no sidewalks, and no curb cuts. He was able to step off the curb, jaywalk, and jog across the street through oncoming traffic, and step up onto the curb on the other side of the street. I, as a wheelchair user, would not be able to do any of that -- nor would a kid.
He did make the point that simply making the effort to use the bus system brightened his mood because it relieved the social isolation of riding alone in a private bubble of a car: getting a chance to say "Hello," and "thank you" to the bus driver, say "hi" to fellow passengers, and simply be sitting next to them in the same space.
...Which just goes to show how deep the problem of social isolation is for everyone in our societies.
We talk a lot about "if you're sick stay home from work" but I feel like we also have a lot more control over "If you're sick stay away from that social function."

If you're almost sick, and going to this social function is going to wear you out and probably push you over the line into actually sick, you should probably stay away from that social function and get some rest.
If your kids are sick, don't drag them to the function. Stay home. Put a funny movie on. We do not need to perpetuate this culture. We do not need to have our kid's cold turn into Grandma's pneumonia just to keep up appearances. We do not need to have our kid's cold turn into 20 other kids' colds just to participate in a craft at the library that you could easily replicate at home by googling for 2 seconds.
genuinely and i’m so tired specifically of parents acting like kids with colds is like, baseline healthy. all the time adults who know i’m immunodeficient invite me over and when i ask if the house is healthy they say yes! and neglect to mention that actually their toddler is sneezing up green snot and their 6 year old has a cough. this happens all. the. time.
i know it’s normal for kids to have gunk all the time (although i do think we should take children’s immune health more seriously too but that’s another post)
and i love spending time with children and i get it sucks to have to raincheck every time your kid catches another bug but if your kid is sick you need to tell me. and if your kid is sick i don’t want to hang out with you one on one until your kid is better because you might have it too more mildly. i need to know if anyone in your household is sick and for some reason a lot of people think that doesn’t include kids.
sure we need to protect grandma ofc! but some of us are 32 and also prone to pneumonia. so unless you plan on covering my hospital bills, just reschedule!!

A new trend is people announcing theme parks that don't really exist, with AI concept art, vague promises of interactivity, and unbelievable time tables, often promising to open a massive theme park in the space of the year. It is, after all, incredibly easy to throw together some buildings and roller coasters and say "hey, I could build this, give me money"

It's weird bc the concept of a DRACULA THEME PARK should be really fun. But not only is the execution boring (both in the AI slop and the real concept map they've shared) but like. They just give up halfway through. The London section isn't even themed to Victorian London (it has a Ferris wheel themed to the London Eye). Why is New Orleans there at all, it's not even an occult-themed New Orleans. It's not helped by the AI not depicting any of the supposed attractions
(they did share real, made-by-a-human - supposedly - concept art of a ride and it's...basically just the Universal monsters ride at Epic Universe)
the grinch is fucked up right. he was created specifically as a critique of the commercialization of christmas, but now all his edge has been sanded off. now he's a generic mascot for "hates christmas," which is great to have because the commercialization of christmas has become so overbearing that that's a demographic you can market to! and now he's just part of the Christmas Fold. he's santa's edgier joker counterpart. he has become the very thing he sought to destroy. back in november i checked out a customer with a $1100 order and most of it was grinch merchandise
