Kirk likes Spock doing things for him like a good boyfriend first officer.

In this scene, they fell in the same line to get their food and yet Kirk didn't bother getting his own spoon which Spock somehow noticed. They're carrying the same amount of stuff (a piece of bread and a bowl of soup) so it wasn't that. Either Kirk was being absent-minded or he did it on purpose.

I really like thinking he does it on purpose.... Look at this one where the drinks were clearly within his reach... He specifically eyes the one Spock takes and waits for him to move it marginally closer before taking it. It's all automatic with no words or looks exchanged.

Also the parallel of handing the drink to the respective love interests.

What Jim and Spock are really talking about in the Briefing Room in TOS The Naked Time

SPOCK: My mother. I could never tell her I loved her.[= I can’t tell you I love you either, Jim, but I do love you.]

KIRK: We’ve got four minutes, maybe five.

SPOCK: An Earth woman, living on a planet where love, emotion, is bad taste.

KIRK: We’ve got to risk a full-power start. The engines were shut off. No time to regenerate them. Do you hear me? We’ve got to risk a full-power start![= Doesn’t matter, let’s give ‘us’ a try!]

SPOCK: I respected my father, our customs. I was ashamed of my Earth blood. Jim, when I feel friendship for you, I’m ashamed.

KIRK: You’ve got to hear me! We need a formula. We’ve got to risk implosion![= Doesn’t matter, let’s give 'us’ a try!]

SPOCK: t’s never been done! Understand, Jim. I’ve spent a whole lifetime learning to hide my feelings. [I’ve never been in a relationship, I can’t do this.]

The way I see TOS, there is a kind of story arc throughout the 3 seasons, and it’s roughly like this:

- Where no man has gone before: Flirting

- The Naked Time: Admitting their feelings for each other

- This Side of Paradise: Jealous Jim

- City on the Edge of Forever: Jealous Spock

- Operation Annihilate: Spock tells Jim he loves him, Bones tells Jim he knows Jim loves Spock

- Amok Time: Spock divorces T'Pring is free for Jim, beginning of relationship

- Metamorphosis: Love between Aliens and Humans is ok, Bones can live with it too.

- Journey to Babel: Jim meets the in-laws

- The Deadly Years: The first big row, almost breaking-up

- Bread and Circuses: Spock admits to Bones that he loves Jim

…

- Turnabout Intruder: closest people in the universe, public hand holding, neck rub

So that’s IMO what’s happening during TOS. And that means I am of the opinion that they did more than flirt during TOS, they were in a (romantic)  relationship, which ended with Spock going to Gol and continued after the sickbay scene in TMP.

Let me summarize differently:

2nd pilot: flirt

last episode of season 1: I love you

first episode of season 2: relationship

I want to believe, that they were already in an open relationship after the naked time, and that after Amok Time they started a how do you call it… a closed relationship? What I mean is, one of those more traditional-style ones.

The backrub makes me think that there was sexual activity between them before Amok Time.

I don’t consider Kirk and Spock to be opposites at heart; though it is true that Spock relies on logic and Kirk on intuition when it comes to taking action, they turn to each other to unite their skills, they complement each other rather than nullify each other as Spock and Bones do often. I have always seen the triumvirate as Spock being reason, McCoy being emotion and Kirk being will. But I’m digressing. There is something I really like about the relationship between Kirk and Spock, though I don’t know to what extent it is canon and not something derived from the awesome work of fandom and its interpretation. With regard to philosophy, for obvious reasons, I tend to identify Spock with the Vulcan concept of kaiidth: what is, is. To start thinking logically, the least one can do is accept the reality -cthia-; it is illogical to worry about what cannot be changed. I suppose this term and surakian philosophy in general are related to or maybe slightly based on the stoic concept of apatheia: fredom from all passions, a state of mind whose purpose is to eradicate the tendency to react emotionally or egotistically to external events, the things that cannot be controlled, so one can reach the optimum rational response to the world. At this point it becomes very obvious to me how amazing spirk is. ‘Cause Jim is often defined as pure hubris -typical characteristic of the tragic hero, someone who believes they can outwit the fate or be smarter than the gods. It is the arrogance of breaking with the limits imposed, quite the opposite of accepting the reality of things. To rebel againts what is and cannot be changed. That fury, that desperate hope. In Greek tragedies, hubris constitutes a flaw and is punished as Jim is punished in TWOK. Personally, I think both positions are relatively reasonable -more if combined. To accept and to rebel. Spock grounds Jim. Jim prevents Spock from getting stunk, from falling into defeatism.
