There was nothing special about this Friday night. Tessa sat in her usual spot in the back of Daily Planet, her half eaten dinner on the table beside her, and her sketch pad in her lap. It was her own little slice of heaven, the place where she felt most comfortable. Which was clear with how far in her head she was. It took her several moments before sheβd even realized someone was speaking to her. Tess looked up through strands of raven hair that had fallen into her face. Was it really this late already?Β βOh, is it closing time?β

TW: CRIME & MURDER Tessaβs life is one thatβs been far from stable. She has hardly any memories of her father, Derek, seeing as heβs been in and out of prison her entire life. At first it was βlittle thingsβ like a few B&E here, a little GTA there. But everything changed when in a robbery gone wrong left the owner of the home he was breaking into dead. And Tessaβs mother, Nicole, to raise her 3 year old alone.
Nicole never claimed to be mother of the year to begin with, after all her parents were less then loving to her, but with Derek behind bars for the rest of his life Nicole started to unravel.
TW: SUBSTANCE ABUSE before Derek was sentenced to live without parole, Β Nicole struggled to stay sober. But after, it was almost as if sheβd given up on the idea of sobriety.
TW SUBSTANCE ABUSE By the age of six poor little Tessa had seen far more then any child should, let alone one so young. Sheβd seen her mom OD, shoot up, steal, and trade sexual acts for dope.
December 24th was like any other day for Tessa and her mom. Theyβd been living in the homeless shelter in LA for about four months, so it wasnβt a surprise that both her birthday and Christmas were going to pass like days of the week. But Nicole took Tess to a park while she went to go get her a βbirthday presentβ. Elated, Tessa followed her momβs instructions and she waited for her.
TW: CHILD ABANDONMENT Hours passed, even Christmas came and went, with no sign of Nicole. And thatβs when Tessa entered the system.
The system wasnβt horrible. After all it gave her a warm bed and food on the table, but she never really felt like she belonged.
Now Tess has managed to land herself a coveted internship, thought it pays for shit, and her dreams of being an illustratorΒ are near. But for some reason her health has been on the decline lately with no explanation why.
