NFL Week 1 Recap: A New York Minute

The NFL is back, and this fan was ever so eager for the season to start. My reasons were simple. One, I had a good feeling about Fantasy Football this year, and two, I'm a Yankees fan who wants to forget about this disaster of a season. With every new NFL season comes new storylines and new questions, and one of the biggest new storylines of the debuting 2023 NFL season had to be Aaron Rodgers making his New York Jets debut on Monday Night Football.

Before I continue, I want to point out that I almost didn't get to watch this game. This was because of this ongoing battle between Spectrum and Disney, which actually resulted in Disney-owned networks being pulled out of Spectrum. They did settle things on Monday morning, mainly because of MNF, so all was well. Anyway, Rodgers made his entrance, and I drank in every bit of Rodgers' time on the field as a New York Jet…until the time was suddenly cut short

How to Move to a City You Don’t Want to Move to

Three weeks ago, me and my soulmate moved home. Though sometimes it feels more like a wholesome Air BnB owned by somebody who has pinched all of our belongings and filled it with our existential innards, rather than “home.”

The whole move, the transition process, it sucks. I’ve struggled. Still am. But in the moments of stillness, when my writhing and wrestling soul is having a breather, flannel on its forehead as its opponent — The Big Change — sits and smiles kindly at it, blood pooling on its lips: that’s when I turn to what has helped me through all this. The moments of reprieve that have provided some relief in and amongst all this madness.

Now, the major healer is my Ben — ironically, he’s the reason we moved, too — and at 5pm when his little Brummie face bounds in through our Liverpudlian doors after work, I can breathe again.

But I don’t really want to feel okay for only one moment a day. So here’s what I did to settle myself in the moments I felt, well, un.

Fantasy Football is BACK

Despite being English, I have found myself becoming more and more enamoured with the sport that the Americans call “football”. Watching American Football in the UK used to be a most difficult proposition, aside from the Superbowl the only way to watch any action was a highlights show at 1am on a Wednesday morning. During the nineties and early 2000’s I was school aged, but after that coverage started to improve. In recent years Sky Sports have added the Thursday and Monday night games, as well as three Sunday matches. Even then, the absolutely baffling decision to host games only on nights when most people have work confuse me no end. But as my interest has grown, I’ve put additional effort into trying to keep up with the games when I can. My wife has since joined me in this interest, but unlike me she is a reasonable person, who goes to bed at a sensible time rather than staying up into the night watching foreign sports and typing up nonsense for strangers to read (4th wall break! Hi, thanks for reading).

But there is a great equaliser, a way that we can both find some enjoyment, and that’s fantasy football. Obviously, we can’t have a league with just two teams, so several friends and onlookers have been roped in. My wife has joined a group on Facebook specifically for female fans of the game, and has made friends that have joined in, and I have Shanghaied in some of my friends that I know are fans of the game, and we have made an 8-team league. I obviously ended up drafting 8th out of 8, but I was pretty happy with the way that my team turned out

A Discourse on Pizza, or 10 Things About Me

So, I despise writing about myself (shit, that should have been point number one), and that means this will probably have no polish to it. By the time we get done together, it’s going to resemble regurgitated alphabet soup garnished with hot takes and bad puns. Get ready.
