Has someone done analysis on hollow knight’s themes of colonialism yet

I kind of got carried away under the cut lol

Yeah like the only cultures that remain after the creation of Hallownest either accepted the rule of the Pale Beings and were able to keep their cultural identity (mushroom clan), opposed to their rule and had the resources to remain seperate (Mantis Tribe and Spider Tribe), or were pushed out of their land after allowing certain territory be used by the kingdom of Hallownest (Mosskin Tribe - specifically where they have been pushed from the Queens Gardens and cut off from Unn as her strength faded)

I do wonder if the Spider Tribe in Deepnest and their alliance with the Weavers was formed through the partnership Herrah is described to have had with the ‘dead sire, once of honoured caste’. The Weavers were aware of the nature of Pale Beings (GMS) and could have formed a unified front against Hallownest with Herrah and the sire sealing that by marriage - the monarchical structure of the Spider Tribe and Weavers now joined as one also probably benefited from her leaving an heir and the weaver curse making it difficult for weavers to conceive likely pushed her to choose to have her child with the pale king so like sucks she had to become a dreamer for her to have a child

To me the Pale King and his kingdom are very white supremacist colonist coded - the Pale Kings plan fails because he has a fundamental misunderstanding of the void and, as Hornet describes in the Wingmould hunter’s journal entry, believes “void can be fashioned to do [the Pale King’s] bidding” - often the same approach colonists have to aspects of the land they colonise

His plan and belief that infusing (?) the vessels with void would make them more likely to be born beings without minds to think, wills to break and no voices to cry suffering point to him viewing the void as purely a primal untamed thing for him to conquer and the opposite to light

So in to me the context of his plan he sees himself as a being of light that ‘expands’ the minds of bugs and sophisticates them while the void is an uncivilised substance that lashes out on instinct so adding them together should make something that is, in his view, truly absent of anything altogether (like -1 + 1 = 0)

I think like he views the void as a primal substance he can assert his control over and give form - the ancient civilisation (or at least the shade beast in the abyss) had a different understanding of the void and believed that the void instead needs to unify for it have control over itself and we do see that with void given focus and void given form
