This one is going to be short because technically, I’m not sure if he counts as a true guest on the show, but it’s one of my personal favourite historical references in Murdoch Mysteries. This special guest is just one throw away statement made by Ruby Ogden in “The Kissing Bandit” when she says to George: “They sent me everywhere — San Fransisco, Bombay, Russia. I interviewed a Revolutionary there by the name of Vladimir Ulyanov. Watch out for him.” To anyone who is familiar with history, this name is important because Vladimir Ulyanov is Vladimir Lenin.  

Lenin was born on April 22, 1870 in Simbirsk, Russia. He was a bright student, but was kicked out of university because he allegedly was part of illegal student club. He turned to Marx’s philosophy, which leads in the end to a hybrid between his and Marx’s ideology now known as Marxism-Leninism. He lead the Bolsheviks starting in 1903. In the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Bolsheviks took power and Lenin became the first head of the Soviet state. Russia was forced out of World War I because of Lenin’s February Revolution and the revolution lead the way to Joseph Stalin’s dictatorship. Falling ill in 1922, Lenin spent his last years throwing his effort towards the Socialist movement and rallied against Stalin. Lenin died on January 21, 1924.
