Martha stops what she’s doing to look at Heather, who’s standing over her lunch table. Veronica had been too busy lately with the Heathers to sit with her so she had been adding unicorn stickers to her favorite notebook to combat the feeling of boredom and loneliness.

“Hey!”

She’s so caught off-guard by Mac’s invitation to the popular kid’s party she doesn’t even notice the snicker. Maybe this could be a chance to make peace or say hi to Ram?

“Wait, you actually want to invite me?! To your party?! I’ve never been invited me to a high school party before! I’ll bring sparkling cider!”

Heather stood against her locker, zoning out as a couple girls were obnoxiously gushing to her about how “cute and sweet” their boyfriends were. As the girls talked and talked, J.D just so happened to walk by as edgy as always. Hey, this could be more fun than the numbskulls she was surrounded with.

“Oh, hey, look, it’s the school serial killer!” she called out, pushing herself off the locker as she did, “How many corners have you brooded in today? Ten? Twenty?”

“Do you even keep count or do you just keep going at it like those oh-so tragic teens in movies who think slashing their wrists makes them deep?” she flicked both of her wrists in the air to make a point.

J.D. was trying to walk to his next class. His left hand was in his pocket and had a book crooked under his right arm. He was looking down slightly, like he was concentrating and wanted as little to do with anyone around him as humanly possible. He looked like he wanted to gut anyone who’d try to talk to him in this moment.

He stopped dead in his tracks at Heather Duke’s snide remarks however. It was nothing new really. Most people saw the trenchcoat and the aura he possessed and assumed the worst in him. Not that he could blame them with all that’s happened. But, even if he tries to not be that affected anymore by the insults it still is a deeply annoying interruption.

“School serial killer? That’s about as original as you are, Heather.” J.D. remarks. “Everyone knows you’re just a sycophant who happened to climb up the school’s food chain.”

He tenses up slightly at the mention of self injury. Like the old, faint scars always obscured by his trenchcoat will start burning and bleeding again from Heather’s retort alone.

“You wouldn’t know truly compelling and deep thought if it hit you over the head. ‘There is nothing more vapid than a philistine petty bourgeois existence with its farthings, victuals, vacuous...’”
