Some things just have to be accepted as they are. Like the weather, that one person you can’t get to like you, or the delayed train. It is what it is. Don’t take it so seriously.

Look at you. You’re young. And you’re scared. Why are you so scared? Stop being paralyzed. Stop swallowing your words. Stop caring what other people think. Wear what you want. Say what you want. Listen to the music you want to listen to. Play it loud as fuck and dance to it. Go out for a drive at midnight and forget that you have school the next day. Stop waiting for Friday. Live now. Do it now. Take risks. Tell secrets. This life is yours. When are you going to realize that you can do whatever you want?

A Letter to Someone I Used to Know
Do you remember when we said nothing would ever split us up? I’m not really sure what happened along the way, but we went from inseparable to couldn’t be far enough from you. We went from writing songs and singing talent shows and pulling all nighters to avoiding each other and backhanded insults at each other.
I’m not afraid to admit that some of all of this is my fault - are you willing to admit you’re at fault too?
I think one of the things that made me pull away was him. I still can’t wrap my head around how obsessed you are with being his friend. What do you have to prove? What is it about him that you can’t let go of? Everything was always him this, him that and I couldn’t handle it anymore.
I can’t handle it anymore.
Now, this isn’t the sole reason I stopped trying. It’s not a reason at all. I just thought after all these years I should say how I really feel, even if it is some anonymous post on the internet you may never read.
I don’t understand why you shaped your life around him. He’s my best friend too, but I don’t find myself trying, trying, trying, to prove myself to him. Meanwhile, you get him to work with you, drive you places, you plan parties for him, you care too much about his opinion…
But no, I think one of the breaking points for me was how little you seemed to care. And I suppose I’m grateful for it, in a way. That I could see and feel your distaste toward me instead of making me listen to bullshit. But it does still sting.
You changed so much, I don’t even know how it could have happened. Somehow, you went from this open, kind, wonderful person to someone who gave people dirty looks in the hallway and tried to be someone you weren’t. You went from someone who was proud of who she was to someone trying to be another popular white girl - someone you never were.
These friendship problems always seem to happen to me - I don’t know if it’s who I am, what I do, what I can see in people, that makes people hate me or leave. I don’t want to play the victim card, because I’m not. I am responsible for giving up in the end. I tried for a while, then just didn’t see the point anymore. So for that, I’m sorry.
Do you remember back in fifth grade, when you tried to take my best friend from me too? We went to the counselor that time; now we just fell apart. Should I have seen that time as a sign? Who knows? I mean, we were just kids then.
I thought things were okay, then I hear you insulting my grades, saying I should be “embarrassed” and “lie to people” about what score I got, and I realized that you had become incredibly shallow. Are you kidding? No “wow I hope her mom wasn’t too mad” or “I hope she wasn’t too broken up about it”. Just “did you hear about the grade she got? I would be so embarrassed… she should lie about her grade instead of telling everyone about it”
I’m not even sure how you heard about it, since I told all of three or four people. And it’s not you knowing that makes me angry. It’s the fact that you insult me, tell me how I should act and how I should feel about it.
This time, I am choosing not to live in the past. I was overambitious, I thought I could do something that I clearly couldn’t. But what happened from that point on is my business. So I’d love to ask you to think next time you want to talk about my grades to my friends. I may not have many, but they will have my back and the second you say shit about me, I’ll know.
You used to be someone I trusted. I wish we could have that friendship again. You knew everything about me, and I knew everything about you. Now I wish you didn’t. I miss the friendship we had, but I don’t miss you. Especially not after who you’ve changed into.
SEE STORIES, NOT JUST FACES.
I’m sitting in a dark house made of mud and cow dung. There is a family of twelve standing around me, offering me tea and lunch. The walls are covered with posters of H1N1 flu information and immunizations charts. This is decor. I’m sitting beside Vicky, a young girl in uniform that I met an hour ago at the Kisaruni school in Kenya. She’s smiling at me as a chicken sits by her feet.
Sixty minutes ago I didn’t know Vicky’s story, rather I only knew her face. I met her in the school assembly hall as she nervously welcomed me. As soon as she got off stage, she broke into a huge smile to hide her shyness and cuddled next to one of her friends, covering her face. At first glance, my brain categorized Vicky as: human, girl, student, Kenyan, adorable and silly. That’s what I could muster up from just seeing her face. Later in the afternoon as I sat in her house, I had the chance to meet her family, learn her story and get a glimpse into her life.
Vicky’s mother didn’t speak english but the translator thanked us numerous times on her behalf for visiting. Her brother graciously offered us lunch, even though doing so may impact the food they had saved in bulk on the floor. One of Vicky’s neighbours, a young girl, sat on my lap happily and was mesmerized by my Yoga pants because they were shiny. She kept touching them with curiosity.
Vicky is one of four children, owns twelve chickens and four goats. Her favourite goat is the one that produces the most milk. When she grows up she wants to be a doctor and the only thing she’s ever wanted in life was a scholarship to go to high school, which she received. Other than that, she told me she needs nothing else, while sitting in a dark room made of mud and cow dung.
When I said goodbye to my new friend Vicky, I looked at her face and saw more than just that. I saw a story filled with hope, ambition, resilience and gratitude. I felt blessed to know her story but at the same time was saddened by remembering all the times I’ve ever only seen a face.
We see so many people a day while on the bus, at work, at the mall or on the road. We see their faces and we judge them based on those characteristics or often times, a gesture that lasted 3 seconds. Someone cut you off on the highway and so you label them a horrible person. Your co-worker has a stain on her shirt and so she’s a slob. Your teacher was a little more strict today and so he’s a huge jerk. We seldom look at people and wonder what their stories are or even realize that they have a story to begin with. Maybe that driver was a single mother late to a job interview, one she desperately needed to make ends meet. What if your co-worker didn’t have time to glance in the mirror before leaving home because her baby boy was feeling sick for the 7th time this month. It’s possible that your teacher just received news that his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Just like you have a life, filled with stories that impact your every day, so does everyone else.
The next time you see a face, know that behind those eyes is a story that could be filled with anything. Everyone has a struggle that we know nothing about and so it is our duty as fellow humans to treat each other with kindness. A little compassion can go a long way, even if it means swallowing your pride and giving people the benefit of the doubt.
An iPhone can recognize faces. You can do so much more than that.

kill the idea that there is only one right way to be in love with someone. kill this idea so people can stop getting anxious over the fact that their love isn’t the same as the one that’s always portrayed in movies and books and tv shows.

I fell for you the way most writers do admiring small details and poorly written haikus people will think it’s fiction that I felt you in my veins when my blood turned to ink and you still consumed my brain I filled up each and every page with all my love for you of hyperboles and metaphors the way most writers do

you guys, if you’re just starting high school or if you’re in middle school and you read this, use as much of your time as you can because it will keep moving faster and faster and one day you’ll look a sheet of paper and remember that you’re seventeen years old instead of fourteen, and that you only have one year of high school left and then it’s college and the real world and it’s scary and you’ll wish you had done more instead of letting time pass you by
