“No --- he never faked his death, I just thought he was dead.”

“Wasting your time? My dear little one I am only making much better use of Horus idek than reading this stupid thing. You’ll get nothing out of it.” He said with a laugh, shutting the book and setting it down. “What’s got you so interested in the dark arts my friend?”
“I have gotten plenty out of it, and I do not recall that being any of your business.” Caleb kept his gaze on Cain awhile longer, eventually shifting it towards a few books he had nearby. “I have read the majority of these books several times, so even if you choose to continue to be a nuisance it will not matter much.”

“What happened, Caleb? Who threatened you?”
“No one threatened me, I just know someone who I believed dead is looking for me.”

Cain chuckled, grinning at the younger boy, and plucking the book from the small boys hands, eyes skimming the text to see where he was. “My parents have this same book you know.
He took his time to shift his gaze up to meet with the older male’s, expression unwavering as he watched him in silence for a moment. “How delightful, as did mine. Now if you would kindly stop wasting my time.”

Cain wandered through the restricted section, special privilidge he got from having wealthy powerful parents, and one of the things he considered to prove he was superior because of his pureblood status. He noticed the small Hufflepuff boy sitting in a corner, a suspicious book in his hands. He recognized the book from his parents libraries, that he studied intensely as a young boy. “What have you got there?”

“Nothing that concerns you.” The reply rolled off his tongue quickly, as if practiced before. He was used to being interrupted in the library, pesky plebs finding it appropriate to pull someone from the world that books often pulled you into, away from the real world for the moment you shared with them. His gaze never left the words on that page he was on, not bothering to look up and see whoever it was this time.

“Wait, someone’s out for your head? Why?” She then continued to shake her head and press her lips together, mumbling slightly as she spoke next. “I don’t know, Caleb. But we can’t just give up, we have to have hope.”
“Hope? I’ve NEVER had hope, not once in my life has anything shown me that that nonsense worked. No praying, no nothing. None of it works. We just have to deal with what other people do, and whatever consequences our own actions cause.”

“Being alone is not how people are meant to exist.” Jean told him, reaching out and hesitating a long moment before gently resting his hand on the other’s upper arm, giving it a gentle squeeze. It was something that Jean had struggled the most with when coming to Hogwarts- he didn’t know what to do without having at least one person by his side at all times. It was how himself and Enzo, and later himself and the rest of the Quidditch team at Beauxbatons functioned- as a unit. “If you are ever worried about him- come find me, yes?”
“Being alone is all I know. Countless books, pain, and my own thoughts.” He was disgusted in himself over how much weakness he was showing, his own whining becoming annoying even to himself. A huff passed his lips as his brows began to knit together, eyes downcast once again, becoming lost in another moment of silence as memories began to flood in. It wasn’t until Jean laid a hand on him that he spoke again, immediately flinching from the unexpected touch. “Ah --- yes, of course. I will do that and...” he hesitated, his next words practically foreign to him. “Thank you.”
