Someone recently asked me where the skull from the title is from.
It is a print made by the relatively-obscure Josef Ferdinand Fromiller (Austrian, 1693-1760) in 1722. Every one of my followers should know this #vanitas!

I’ve visited this place, this is the Capuchin Crypt of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini in Rome, Italy. It consists of six rooms, five of which are decorated with bones from approximately 4,000 former friars who died between 1528 and 1870 (some are still buried in the soil). All the rooms have different meanings and have been decorated with different bones. There isn’t much info or good pictures of the rooms online but I think these are from the Crypt of the Three Skeletons, the Crypt of the Skulls and the Crypt of the Pelvises. The rooms are fairly small and the ceilings are low, so you can see the bones and the mummified bodies really well.
