In all seriousness, it is quite troubling that an UMSU councillor feels empowered enough to call for the destruction of a century old news institution simply because of points of personal ideological difference. I strongly urge all of my fellow U of M peers, friends, and comrades to get in touch with their UMSU councillors - or to make an appearance at this Thursday's UMSU council meeting as a student at large (room 176 Helen Glass) - to voice their concerns with what is, in effect, a disturbing attack on the freedom of the press. If you disagree with the arguments presented in the opinion pages that I edit, do not take to the halls of student union power and attempt to silence critics. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and send me an email at [email protected]. Submissions are free and open to any and all who choose and are willing to write a coherent, articulated political opinion. Remember that an independent student media is vital for the functioning of campus democracy, and that the Manitoban exists for us, the students - not to bobblehead in agreement with the policy courses taken by our union. If you take debate and democracy seriously, then exercise those in good faith in the public forum. The Manitoban will be here for that when you are ready. http://ift.tt/2DQEQRR
