“The Courage to Speak”: Mental illness and recovery in Natsume's Book of Friends

CONTENT WARNING: Discussions of mental illness and child abuse. SPOILERS for selected episodes of Natsume’s Book of Friends.

I first watched Natsume’s Book of Friends, an anime based on Yuki Midorikawa’s shoujo manga of the same name, about two years ago. I was in tears throughout most of the experience and it quickly became one of my favorite anime of all time. I was charmed by the characters and blown away by the gentle beauty and warmth of the world.

The story spoke to my own experiences and feelings in a way that was hard to understand. It was as if the series had given me this hug of reassurance I didn’t realize I needed. Some wounded part of me I’d never fully recognized had been soothed. I was surprised that the show could speak so much to my reality, because it’s premise is pretty fantastical.

Vampire Chronicles AMC and Life Update:

I haven't been involved in the VC fandom for a while. I did finish season 1 of the AMC series. I thought it was really camp and not what I expected at all. I do think the actor portraying Lestat completely nailed his portrayal. He's so conniving and petulant and does a really great job in his role!!!

My mental and physical health really declined last year after getting myself (demisexual and on the Ace spectrum) out of a horribly toxic polyamorus relationship (my first ever). I still need intense therapy to recover but I'm significantly better.

I've been in psychiatric inpatient a few times (voluntary just to be taken care of) since October.

During my stay there I got into Chinese Queer romance/ graphic novels, BL or Danmei to be more specific.

Particularly this one very well known Author named MXTX [Mo Xiang Tong Xiu].

Currently reading her Heaven Official's Blessing series and watching the corresponding anime of the same title (there's also a manga).

These 2 men are officially my new favorite fictional queer couple of all time and they make me cry because they are such couple-goals. 🥺

Hua Cheng is one of my favorite characters of all time. 😁 He is me and I am him.

Genshin Impact has also taken over my life and those of the people around me in a BIG way. although I didn't play much last year for health reasons I'm still very active in the community.

Long time no speak

Genshin Impact has taken over my life and I just haven’t thought about vampires for a while now. 😅

One of my favorite things about QotD is how Khayman, a highly underrated and overlooked character, spends literal paragraphs draaaaaaaaaaging each of the characters in every one of his POV chapters. 😂 I love it so much.

He shows up desperate to warn the others about Akasha and what does he find? Lestat and Louis fucking around in the limosine whilst Lestat blows kisses to his fans. The 2 of them knowing nothing about nothing while the world is about to end. Mael’s salty ass. He literally tells Mael to calm TF down or it will get him killed. Daniel’s dancing in the crowd giving absolutely no fucks. And Armand… He goes on for paragraphs about attractive the thinks he is. Tries desperately to get his attention and warn him about Akasha but keeps getting shut down by this icy thot.

Nobody’s got their priorities together except Khayman.😂 Khayman is the real MVP of this book.

Khayman reminds me of Praytell from Pose. He should definitely be played by a black actor. This elder member of the council who’s primary function is to tell the others how it really is.

Piggybacking off of my last post

I'm a little disappointed that they didn't cast younger actors. I feel like despite their age the vamps still very much have the mentality of whatever age they were when they transformed.

Lestat being a petulant 20 year old is part of his character. Can't imagine someone in their 30s behaving the same way. Also context is important when it comes to age. Lestat ran away from home at a young age it makes less sense for him to run off with his lover to start a career as an actor in his 30s.

Idk. Maybe I just want to see a bunch of 20 something's doing dumb things because it's relatable. (I'm in my 30s)

Edit: Also, don't tell me that it's because of a aging thing. A 25 yr old doesn't look that much different than a 30 year old.
