We continue the cleaning and reassembly of the Volvo Penta MD2030 engine while on our mooring in Luperón. To break up the monotony of the technical rebuild, I spice up the routine boat chores with some music. A good playlist makes it much more fun to navigate the tight spaces while making the bed in a tiny bunk area, washing dishes in the galley, and sweeping down the cockpit.

We are on our mooring in Luperón to tackle the thorough cleaning and reassembly of the Volvo Penta MD2030 valve cover, coolant pump, and heat exchanger. I am prepping the engine block for our newly machined cylinder head while Dave works to clean up the contamination he found upon unwrapping it. He gets the surface ready using a razor blade and nipple remover so we can move forward with the rebuild. We reassemble the top of the engine and torque the head bolts in sequence to the exact Volvo Penta MD2030 specs.

Or, if you want to stay in the galley after the heavy tools are put away: Baking a cake is just more fun in a sheer sarong with nothing under it. We are skipping the bottoms and getting icing and batter everywhere.

We spent the day hiking out to the shoreline blowholes near Luperón. The scenery was incredible and it was a great way to see more of the area. Back on the boat, we finally finished installing the new helm seat. The hike left me soaked, and once the seat was mounted, I spent some time sitting in it to check the fit and feel. It is a massive improvement over the old one and I might have left it a little wet too. In Luperón, the mosquitoes ruined our hike almost immediately, so Dave turned his attention back to the starboard engine and we opened up the new DJI Action5 Pro to compare it to the GoPros we’ve been using for years.
I kept fighting the mold and cleaning the boat, and Christmas got a little sweeter with the first brownies out of the new oven.

In Luperón we attempted a hike that the mosquitoes cut short almost right away. Dave opened the starboard engine to figure out the problem. We compared the new DJI Action 5 Pro to the GoPros we rely on. I cleaned pants-free and baked our first Christmas brownies in the new oven while keeping the mold from winning. These are the real days aboard.
