Seaman Walter King of the German windjammer Pamir posed for this photograph in 1949. One of the last of the commercial sailing ships carrying cargo around the world, the Pamir was wrecked in a hurricane in the mid Atlantic in 1957, hastening the end of the era of commercial windjammers.
