I have come to realize that there is this gross ideology that being alone, or spending time by yourself is “brave” for a single women.

Get the fuck outta here.

I am one of the coolest people I know. So why wouldn’t I want to spend some quality time with myself? Take myself out to eat, see a movie. Literally the cheapest date ever!

Recently I went to a restaurant, a table for one, when a group of friends (a “squad” of seven) came in after me. They were talking and laughing together then it got suspiciously quiet. When I looked up to their table, all of them were on their phones not talking to each other. This “rather normal” occurrence happened three more times and lasted a good five minutes each time.

So, really, is there a difference? 

I am not brave. I am selfish, picky, and lazy. Also all my closest friends are guilty of the same solo yolo actives as I am. So we do things together, but separately.

My poetry partner, Shelby Handler, and I had our group poem about diaspora and honoring our ancestors posted online this past month. Thankful for the boost and excited to be able to share it online with folks. We wrote and memorized the piece within a week to perform at nationals. It was a trip! Shout out Shelby for all their magic.
