I’m sorry but I feel as if this isn’t taken seriously at all, especially in the yaoi community. Yaoi was literally meant to objectivy gay men to the same degree that lesbian porn is in the west, and as well as supporting unrealistic ideals for men (cough cough have you SEEN how fcking lanky some of them are) they also enforce the idea that gay men in Japan are all crossdressers, and thus all trans women and drag queens are all just gay men. Especially with all the homophobic ideas brought over from the west, in Japan the only source of knowledge or representation they have of gay people is in the media, which of course gives off a completely distorted view. And the same goes for gay ships in western culture. I’ve read a lot of fan fiction and it seems as if a lot of them are just compltetely faceless, emotionless smut fests which is okay up to the point where male characters are being objectified, which again is just as bad as lesbian porn. I have a friend who spends at least 50% of her time reading fanfiction or looking at fanart, and yet if I ask her how she would react if someone came out or if she would ever have a crush on a girl she seems completely disgusted. Representation of LGBTQA+ communities is so important in order to create a better understanding of them, and I’m p sure yaoi manga or smutfest drarry fanfictions isn’t what the gay (and in some cases trans) community need.
