Oh so like I was thinkin about sharks again and I just remembered that countershading is a thing and it’s just. Really interesting especially in deep water fish but like. That might just be a common knowledge thing so I won’t ramble on abt it but its just. Cool

AH AH OKAY COOL SO LIKE. U KNOW HOW SHARKS ARE GREY ON TOP N WHITE ON BOTTOM probably it’s most noticeable on great whites cause they’ve got like a solid line between the two colors ANYWAY

When ur in the ocean, stuff can see you from all 360 degrees! especially from the bottom if you’re swimmin around in the open water. So countershading is like!!! A form of camouflage that’s really cool. They’re dark on the top bc when smth is above them and looks down, the dark color blends in with the darker water underneath them and vice versa, when something looks up at them the white blends in with the sunlight shining down.

IN SUPER DEEP WATER THOUGH THIS IS ESPECIALLY COOL BC!!! they’re down in the deep dark water where there’s no sunlight so theoretically they wouldn’t need countershading- BUT. They use countershading with bioluminescence!!!! Since there isn’t any sunlight reaching them, but deep sea fish can still sense light, shallower waters still seem brighter, so instead of using coloration in their skin, a lot of deep sea fish use bioluminescence on their undersides to disrupt their sillohuettes- since theyre PRODUCING light, they don’t really have a shadow against the brighter water and aaaahg it’s just. So fucking cool
