The crowd was getting bigger and bigger, the sun setting down soon and people gathering at the square were waiting hard for the big moment. Soon enough the king and queen of the Woodland Realm themselves would appear on an every-year visit in the town.
Sigrid heard tales about the elvenqueen. Some said she was witty and charming, some said she was rude and sarcastic, but everybody agreed that she was extraordinary beautiful. The girl wished to see this beautiful lady with her own eyes, more than anything.
She never thought herself very pretty. Dad’s always told her how beautiful she is and how much she looks like her mother, but Sigrid never in fact believed it. Not the beautiful part, at least.
Walking down the dock with her little sister, she was getting sweaty under the finest cloak she was wearing. It was very thick and warm, but it was the priciest and the most quality one she owned, she only wore it for special occasions. She also had hair braided in a special way today, if the queen happened to glance upon her. Which she doubted could happen, but who knew.
When they arrived at the square, the trumpets were already loudly announcing the arrival. The master of Lake Town was on his little wooden stage in the middle of the place and looking in the direction of the golden carriage, arriving.
Nestariel didn’t really like Esgaroth. If she could, she would avoid this visit. Each visit, honestly. But not because of the smelly air and muddy ground, not because of paupers and hungry mouths who observed her from below as if she was a goddess. No, there was another reason.
She hated the master. Well, perhaps not hate him literally, but she really, really did not like him. She has seen how he treats his people. It was his fault that they were starving. It was his fault that the previous centre of the markets in the world was now a forsaken town. It was his fault.
But Thranduil traded with these men anyway and she could do nothing about it. So each year’s visit in this town was necessary and she needed to attend it. She wore her finest silver gown and gems and velvet shoes. She held her chin up and a faint smile on her face as always. She was polite and she held back, as usual.
And the master looked horrible in this colour. Red did not suit him at all.
"Can you see anything?" Sigrid asked her little sister when the golden carriage was arriving at the scenery. People surrounding the girls were mostly tall, so even Sigrid herself had trouble seeing the master clearly, not to mention the little Tilda.
Grabbing her sister's hand, Sigrid moved away from the edge of the square they were standing at and hurried closer to the actual event. The crowd was somewhat grumpy at the sight of the young girls making their way in such manner, but for the first time in her life, Sigrid didn't care at all. She was waiting for this moment for a long time and the last thing she was hoping for was the last row on the edge of a dock.
They were getting closer and closer to the first row, closer than Sigrid even imagined she could get to, and she took care that nothing happened to little Tilda...
But what she wasn't careful about was the ground they were walking on. Frozen floor was slippery and a few snowdrops now and then certainly made things worse. And slipping in front of the carriage was certainly not what Sigrid was planning.
Where does your journey end?
"Maybe we didn't raise her the way we should have. Maybe we went wrong somewhere."

( She gazed out at Tilda, from where the little girl was knee deep in the lake. Her lips twitched into a smile. )
"She’s been raised just fine, Sigrid - you were the same way at her age, you know.”
the-older-daughter:
"I tried to s t o p him, ma’!" Sigrid said and chuckled again, because she clearly wasn’t convincing.
"Oh, did you now?"
( Her tone was teasing, but not for a moment did she actually believe Sigrid. )
"That explains the squeals you gave."
"I did not!" she said, laughing. "Bain was the one who was squealing." Sigrid looked back at her sister who was now practically digging her way out of the water and heading back to her family.
"Maybe we didn't raise her the way we should have. Maybe we went wrong somewhere."

( She laughed and shifted so she got a better look at her oldest daughters face. )
"And you what, dear? Didn’t want him to go back the only one wet? Or it looked fun?"
"I tried to s t o p him, ma'!" Sigrid said and chuckled again, because she clearly wasn't convincing.

the-older-daughter:
"No I wasn’t!" Sigrid shouted, chuckling. "I was a good daughter, clean and dry, thank you very much," she said jokingly and looked over to her little sister.
"Clean, yes. But dry? Remember those summers your father and I would take you and Bain out? We’d always come back with your skirts wet."
( Laughing, she shook her head at Tilda. That dress would be a torture to clean. )
Sigrid blushed and looked away, trying to hide her laughter. "That... that was because Bain was getting in the water and I-" she started, but didn't know how to finish.

"You’re killing him." [heyyyy!]

"I’m teaching him. It takes a very weak man indeed to touch a woman without her invitation.”
"That’s enough!" Sigrid shouted and tried to drag back her brother. "Leave him, don’t get your hands dirty because of him.”

In later history, Bain goes on to succeed as King of Dale. And he has a son called Brand, and King Brand of Dale fights in the War of the Ring later on in Lord of the Rings
A wild Brand mention appears in the Desolation of Smaug Behind The Scenes clips (x)
