It's the venting. In the USA, dryers have massive exhaust vents to the outside of the room/building that take the hot wet away and leave hot dry behind. In many other countries, dryers do not generally have external exhaust vents, and simply fill the room they are in with the hot wet, which may or may not be enough to actually remove the hot wet from the clothing depending on how well ventilated the room itself is.
for this reason 1) you generally can't leave the dryer open in winter without causing a draft and 2) sometimes when you're walking around outside in the US the world will suddenly smell of clean laundry because you're near someone's house and their dryer is running
And 3) Eventually your drier stops drying things so well and you have to hire somebody to bring a ladder up to the vent (either high up an exterior wall or on the literal roof) and clear out the accumulated lint and cruft blocking it
You ought to do this regularly even if the dryer efficiency remains the same, because dryer lint is fantastically competent at burning your damn house down if you let it catch fire.
I'm in Australia (no exhaust vents), and I've found that if your dryer starts making hot wet laundry, you first clean out the lint trap that you already know about and clean every time, and then you go looking for the second secret lint trap that nobody told you about and clean out the year's worth of lint in there that you were blissfully unaware of. The dryer will now mostly dry your laundry again, and give you either hot dry laundry or hot just-very-slightly-damp laundry.
This reminds me of the story about the couple who kept cleaning two different dryer vents and were confused why their so never cleaned the lint
That post was what first prompted me to go looking for a possible second lint trap
I'm genuinely appalled that dryers outside the US are not vented to the outside world. That much moisture just...builds up in your house/apartment every time you use your dryer?? Does that not lend itself to mold growth over time?
Mine recondenses the water into a little tub that I empty into a sink after use. I could also get a plumber in to vent the water directly into the greywater but I prefer being able to have the dryer in a part of the room with no direct water system access.
That makes much more sense tbh. I was envisioning a steam room and the associated drywall moisture damage every time you do laundry, like "at that point I would just opt for a clothesline" lol.
(Which we do still use in the US, despite the popular conception that we all have dryers. Not as common as it once was, but I've lived several places where we used a clothesline bc we had a washer but no dryer.)
In Australia most people use clotheslines all the time, and even those of us who have dryers tend to only use them when the weather is too wet to make line drying practical. Electricity is expensive and sunlight is free. Can't speak for people living in city apartments and suchlike though.
I grew up in Aotearoa and formerly lived in the US and now live in the UK and yes every dryer I have ever seen is absolutely vented to the outdoors???
What are the Australians doing?
Line drying, mostly.
I’m in the uk and every dryer ive seen has either had a removable condenser or has been piped into the wall/grey water like derin said. Most people over here use a clothes line or horse.
I'm sorry, a clothes line or a WHAT?
A clothes horse
They come in many shapes, most of them designed to fold away easily when you're not drying or airing anything.
In the USA, we call those (clothes/laundry) drying racks. There's a bit of variation depending on the brand advertising, but I've never seen them called a clothes horse.
I've only ever heard/seen "clotheshorse" used to refer to a particularly fashionable/fashion-oriented person, typically one with an extensive wardrobe.
They call people that because they are likening the people to the drying racks, acting like their purpose is to hang and display an absurd number of clothes on their bodies.
I've learned so many mildly interesting and delightful things from this post!
"why do girls always talk about their periods"
brother if you had diarrhea for a week straight every single month, including all the stomach pain and the uncontrollably loose stool that comes with it, you would find it very fucking difficult to avoid talking about it too.
And it’s also extremely beneficial for people to talk about their periods! It breaks down the shame of it in society, and can also teach people what’s a normal period and what’s not.
Keep talking about them!
FULL | Michelle Obama's speech brings Barack to tears: 'You gotta look a...
I'mma' speak on this shit ONE TIME! & I'mma' be done wit it! This is how you talk shit about maga, republicans, Trump, and everybody else on the right without ever mentioning their mthfkn' names! This is how you do this shit! You do it with class! My guess is, the Obama sat down and discussed building this center because they knew Trump was going to fuck up the white house! They wanted to preserve decency and humanity long after the White House is gone! Because, the orange ogre has fkn' ruined it! Don't be surprised if a sitting president one day operates in that very same building instead of Washington DC! I promise you there is plenty of room! I have watched this video three times today! If Michelle Obama had ran for president she would have won! She speaks like a politician! She could have pulled it off! She may hate politics, but she knows the game very well! The crowd there was still bigger than the number of degenerates that showed up at that stupid bullshit at the White House! If I had my way, I would burn the White House down to the ground and the next administration could operate from Obama Presidential Center! Take notes Republicans! This is what class looks like! And yes! There are black people that have class! Fuck what your inbred parents taught you! 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕👊
uninstall adobe acrobat. it is malware. it has been malware. these aren't opinions: acrobat meets the definition of malware.
it installs a user-login-time "startup" executable that ignores any windows directives to disable it on startup. doing so only removes the even-more-malicious taskbar-icon-creating advertisement-notification-creating process. no matter what you do, the sleeper "updater" process starts when you log in, and runs perpetually
it sends & receives encrypted network traffic both periodically and non-periodically. both are bad, both are suspicious, and a program doing both is more suspicious than the sum of their parts. and to boot: acrobat will polymorphically edit its code after such network activity
this isn't new: it has always done this. now, it does not even do the thing it is meant to: provide a way to interact with documents, which is amongst the very first features computers were built to provide. you can merely open PDFs and read some of their content in the narrow space between the requests for adobe to give them your money, and interface for features you cannot use (because you don't) or do not, have not, and will not ever need
adobe and microsoft would very much like the user's cultural norms around computers to allow for advertisement built into the local software and even operating system itself. the web being 100% advertisements was not enough! sure enough, acrobat will hijack the windows notifications system thing to give you the 2026 equivalent of pop-ups
i don't really know enough about windows software equivalents, so i'll paypal $20 to the first person that reblogs this with a list of 3-5 PDF reader/editor/etc acrobat equivalents that meet the following criteria:
open source, locally-built executables must match checksum of prebuilt distributed executable
no paid features/premium version/subscription/whatever
not a toy hobby project thing, must be windows-users-proof
cheers
Firefox's built-in PDF.js viewer: does everything you could want from a basic viewer, fast enough search, and can now do annotations for filling in forms and such
KDE Okular: is a decent viewer and can also do basic annotations, and is so not-a-toy that you can even download it on the Windows app store.
LibreOffice Draw: I don't ever really like having to open this but if you have to edit a PDF in detail it does work, and doesn't just vomit up a bunch of polygons when you give it text to work with. Better as an authoring tool than an editor.
I've 100% replaced free acrobat with the firefox built-in and it works wonderfully for general office use and research/reading/viewing. It doesn't have robust redaction capabilities, but if you need to fill and sign and highlight a form it's actually much more intuitive than acrobat reader.
My only problem with firefox's PDF viewer is that it only shows single page, and doesn't have a facing/book view option. (AFAIK!) So for reading, I use Sumatra PDF, which is free, open source, portable, and comically lightweight. (Adobe Acrobat is 426 MB, Sumatra is 10 MB.) No edits here though.
"if you convince people that there's no difference between a blood thirsty dictator and a dedicated leader who is human and thus unable to solve every problem, the dictator wins."
Millions died of covid because Trump dismantled the international disease task force with some of the hardest hit areas being minority communities and Native American reservations.
Hundreds of thousands of people overseas now will die of aids because he dismantled the USAID.
None of that would’ve happened with Clinton or Kamala. Not voting because you think they’re the same or being tired of democrats being uninspiring is the White Person moment. Everyone alive in the US needs to humble themselves that they were privileged and lucky enough to survive Trump’s first term, because a lot of vulnerable people aren’t alive to say the same. Not participating doesn’t make you a sovereign citizen, it’s just avoiding responsibility for our out of control country so you don’t have to get a bad taste in your mouth.
Millions of people - mostly children, mostly in Africa - will die over the next few years due to the USAID cuts.
People of color, regardless of immigration status, are being kidnapped off the streets.
ICE is summarily murdering people.
Civil rights is under attack. LGBTQ rights are under attack. Trans people are being criminalized.
Millions are at risk because of rollbacks in vaccine programs.
Ukrainians are freezing and dying while Trump tries to help Putin.
If you don't think this matters you are the most despicable sort of person.

i hate how much ai has taken the joy out of seeing something cool. you used to see something cool, like a really intricate drawing or a video of someone doing an insane skill or two animals doing something cute, and because there were no mental gymnastics involved in discerning whether or not it was 'real' you could sit there and have the joy of like, "wow! how did they do that! how cool is it that they made that! what a wonderful moment to have captured!" and now every time i see something remarkable i hate that i have to sit there and be like okay let me go frame by frame to make sure everything lines up. let me double check the page this comes from. let me scroll through the comments to make sure no one called out something i missed. like i want the joy of being able to trust someone else's creation back, please
Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.
