The Black Eyed Children

In recent decades, witnesses have described seeing children along dark roadsides, in empty parking lots, and even in the doorsteps late at night.

These kids will ask for a ride or to wait with you while their parents come to retrieve them.

All seems normal until the witness notices that the children have dark, soulless, black orbs for eyes. No irises. No pupils. Just dead onyx eyes. They usual appear in pairs. Very often they wear outdated clothes and hairstyles and speak in monotone voices.

They have come to be know as the black-eyed children, or black eyed kids (BEK’s).

It is said that this modern legend started in the 1980’s or 1990’s and BEK’s have been seen all over the world.

One of the earliest stories states that an older couple in Vermont, U.S.A. heard a loud knock on the door during an evening in which the weather had become inclement. The wife opened the door to see two children standing guard on the front porch. They were wearing clothes and hairstyles that seemed outdated for the time, but nothing about them seemed too odd.

They asked the woman if they could wait in her home for their parents to pick them up. Feeling bad for the two youngsters she let them in, despite her husband’s slight obligation after getting a funny feeling about the two children.

The two children sat silently on the couch, despite the husband trying to make polite conversation. The wife brought the two kids hot chocolate when she noticed that one of the cats seemed irritated by the presence of the kids, almost terrified of them.

The children asked if they could use the restroom and it was then that the couple noticed their dark black eyes. The husband then realized that his nose was bleeding. The lights began to flicker and the power eventually went out. The children both announced “our parents are here”.

They promptly left the house and got into a vehicle driven by two very tall ominous men. The power came back in and the couple were left with more questions than answers.

In the coming days the couple’s cat eventually died after lying on the same spot in the couch where the children had sat. The husband continued to get nosebleeds and was eventually diagnosed with an aggressive form of skin cancer.

A more well known story, which was featured on a show called Monsters and Mysteries in America, took place in 1996. A Texas reporter, Brian Bethel, was parked outside of a movie theater in a shopping outlet. Next to the movie theatre was a small local business that divided cable and Internet services. He was sitting in his car writing a check to pay his internet bill when two kids, aged about 12 years old, tapped on the window of his car.

When he looked up he was startled by the appearance and energy coming off of the two strange kids. Nonetheless, he rolled the window open a crack to speak to them. They asked him for a ride home, or something along those lines. He refused and the children became persistent.

“It won’t take long, it’s not far”

“We don’t want money”

“We don’t have a gun or anything”

Like any sane individual would do, Brian quickly apologized to the youngsters and rolled up the window. He drove off quickly, never looking back.

Sightings of BEK’s have even been witnessed in the UK where a pair of children is said to haunt a local pub.

Nowadays, most witnesses see BEK’s along dark roadsides trying to hitchhike. Every witness experiences the same unnatural paralyzing fear in the presence of a couple of strange children.

Many believe that BEK’s are extraterrestrials as they have been witnessed with the notorious Men in Black. Others believe they are demons or the dark spirits of children who died too soon under treacherous circumstances. Some people have even witnessed BEK’s standing at the foot of their beds during episodes of sleep paralysis.

Regardless of their origin, or whether or not the rumors are true, the BEK’s have gone down in history as one of the creepiest modern paranormal phenomenon.

So if you find yourself being approached by a strange pair of children on a dark desolate road, do yourself a favor…drive fast and get out of dodge!

The Lady in Granite

In the small town of Penn Yan in Upstate New York, there is the legend of the lady in granite.

A woman named Matilda was born in 1859. Later in her life she married Francis, a man who was 9 years older than her. Despite the age gap the marriage was good for the couple. They lived in a small house downtown and all was happy and blissful in their life. In fact, the two were madly in love with each other, so much in fact that they vowed to each other that when one of them died the other would never remarry.

In 1936, at the age of 77, Matilda met her untimely end. You must be thinking that Francis never remarried, right? Wrong! After the death of his wife, Francis wasted no time getting back into the dating world and ended up marrying a much younger woman.

Not too long after the new romance started between Francis and his new lady, locals noticed something strange on Matilda’s black granite gravestone. As if it had happened overnight, half of Matilda’s face appeared on the gravestone, and she didn’t look happy. Many were convinced that she was angry at her late husband for breaking their vow and betraying her!

Word had gotten around to Francis and he suddenly felt uncomfortable about the idea. He asked ground crew at the cemetery to buff the face of the stone. They buffed and polished till the face was gone, but it soon appeared again! They tried this several more times with the same results. Eventually, Francis had her original headstone taken out and replaced with a new one. The same thing happened. Half of Matilda’s angered face manifested on the black granite. He apparently had the headstone replaced several times, but his former wife’s face kept coming back, literally haunting him for the rest of his days.

Though many decades have passed, the angry face of Matilda still remains. People who throw rocks, or spit on the stone are said to have a lifetime of bad luck. Local teenagers have even dared each other to slap the angry face of Matilda. Their fate? They wake up the next morning with a red handprint across their cheek, said to be the handprint of the already angry ghost of Matilda, yet again getting revenge for being betrayed.

I grew up in a town about 45 minutes from Penn Yan, NY and this was always the story I heard about the legend. However after doing some research I have found other variations of the story. One version states that Francis was an unfaithful husband and Matilda vowed to haunt him in the afterlife for his adultery. Another version says that Francis was abusive towards Matilda, and her final act against him was the face on her gravestone to haunt him with her looming presence. The last version I found was a bit different. It stated that Matilda and Francis has a troubled marriage and didn’t get along. While Matilda was on her deathbed Francis said he couldn’t wait for her last breathe so he could finally be rid of her. Matilda then became angry at his words, threatening to haunt him in the afterlife so that he’d never be rid of her. All these versions end the same, with Matilda’s angry face appearing on the headstone and it either being buffed out by ground crew or the stone replaced, only for the face to reappear again and again.

Though these stories are fun and great to tell to friends, they lack a lot of historical accuracy.

For starters, Francis actually passed away before Matilda. His headstone is in their family plot and clearly states that he died ten years before his wife.

The face that appeared on the headstone is actually just a white blob shape, though people swear it depicts the face of an angry old woman. It is most likely just a flaw in the stone or a chemical reaction. It also does not appear anywhere in historical records that the stone was ever moved or replaced.

Although not much was known about the private lives of Matilda and Francis, it was known that they lived a happy life together, so that too is debunked.

Of course, legends are legends and although some parts are true most are just wild stories that have been made up, or misinterpreted, throughout the years. Of course I don’t believe any of it, except what is true. I hope that Francis and Matilda are resting in peace and that those who disrespect their graves get what they deserve, whether it’s getting into trouble with the law or facing the wrath of a vengeful dead woman.

The Fresno Nightcrawlers

In 2007, strange footage was witnessed on a CCTV camera in Fresno, California. The owner of the home had positioned the camera to survey his front yard and driveway.

One night his dog was barking relentlessly so he decided to check the live camera footage. That’s when he noticed the strange looking white creature with a small head and long legs. He quickly woke his brother to look at the footage as well. It was claimed that small footprints had been left on the lawn, but this was never documented. By the time authorities were called to investigate the area the footprints were nowhere to be seen.

This is was the first sighting of the cryptid that became known as the Fresno Nightcrawler, but it wasn’t the last.

In March of 2011 the creature was once again captured on a security camera either in or near Yosemite National Park. This time two beings, a larger one and a smaller one, were seen slowly walking slowly down a path.

Another sighting took place in December of 2014, but this time in Carmel, Ohio. An older couple who had just moved into the area had noticed an odd occurrence on their property in the form of a perfect circle on their lawn that remained green regardless of the weather. One night the two were driving home and upon driving up a small hill they witnessed a grayish-white creature. It stood about 7 feet tall on two long legs and was very slender. The couple said the creature, which they described as an “alien”, ran across the road and into the nearby forest. This creature, though similar to the Fresno Nightcrawler, became known as the Carmel Area Creature.

In 2017 the creature was captured on a handheld camera, this time in Poland. Though the capture of the creature was quick, it appeared to be very similar to the creature captured in Yosemite.

The most recent sighting of the Fresno Nightcrawler was captured on a home security camera on April 24, 2020 in Billings, Montana. The creature was seen on the camera footage at approximately 9:45pm.

While many consider these sightings to be hoaxes creatures by practical jokers who have either worn billowy pants and walked on stilts, used a pair of pants as a puppet on strings, or just simply manipulated footage using CGI. However, some have other explanations.

It was first thought that these creatures resembled that of a creature or spirit in local Native American folklore, but this has since been debunked after research showed no evidence of any such tales amongst local indigenous tribes.

Other explanations include the creatures being a new species that is possibly primate in origin. Some also believe the creatures could be extraterrestrials.

A more likely explanation is that just like most other cryptid sightings, this is a case of mistaken identity. Some believe that what could have been captured was simply a deer standing on its hind legs and being spotted at an angle that makes them appear as though they are tall, long legged creatures.

Whatever the explanation, the Fresno Nightcrawler has become a beloved crytid amongst Cryptozoologists and fans of the supernatural. With their innocent and docile nature they have inspired many to create artwork and merchandise based on the cute two legged creature, much of which can be purchased on websites such as Etsy.

Though we may never know the truth of the Fresno Nightcrawler sightings the internet will continue to be alive with chatter and adoration for the friendly nightwalkers.

The Jersey Devil

The Jersey Devil is a demon said to inhabit the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey. The legend began in 1735 when Mother Leeds found out she was pregnant with her 13th child, thirteen being seen as an unlucky number to many. With her husband being a drunk who was unable to provide for his family, Mother Leeds live anything but a wealthy lifestyle. Distraught by the news of conceiving her 13th child she yelled to the heavens “Let this one be the devil!” She was seemingly unaware of what was to come.

Many months later she went into labor, having forgotten about her outburst. On a stormy night her family sat in another room, awaiting the arrival of the new baby, while midwives assisted Mother Leeds. According to legend the birth went as expected. The child was born healthy and normal. However within minutes the baby transformed into a gruesome creature before the eyes of its mother and her midwives. The creature then went on to kill Mother Leeds, the midwives, and most of its siblings before flying up the chimney and out into the woods. In another variation of the legend, Mother Leeds experiences a rough labor, only for the demon to rip itself from her womb and fly out the window. Over the years many variations of the legend have been told, but all end with the Jersey Devil flying out into the Pine Barons where it still resides to this day.

Many sightings of the Jersey Devil have been reported over the years. Witnesses claim to see strange footprints in the sandy soils of the Pine Barrens. These footprints are either described as being those of a strange bird, or more hoof-like, similar to those of Satan. Despite seeing these strange footprints, many never actually see the creature. Those who have describe it as having the body of a kangaroo, head of a dog, face of a horse or a goat, large bat-like wings, antlers, a forked reptilian tail, and large claws. The creature is also said to move extremely quickly and emit blood-curdling screams and screeches. However, these claims have never been proven.

The Jersey Pine Barrens are also claimed to not be the only locations where the elusive demon has been spotted. Eyewitnesses claim to have also spotted the devil in neighboring states such as Delaware and Pennsylvania, but these claims have also never been proven.

Regardless of whether the creature exists or not, the Jersey Devil has made a huge impact on not just NJ locals or cryptozoologists, but also pop culture. The Jersey Devil has been seen in video games, films, and TV. The devil made an appearance in an episode of the-X-files, where he was portrayed as a strange feral man/hermit, rather than a gruesome looking demon. The name of NJ’s NHL hockey team, the Jersey Devils, is also inspired by the legend! For years to come the legend of Mother Leeds and her cursed 13th child will captivate the minds of anyone brave enough to believe the stories. The Ningen is a creature of Japanese origin. The word “Ningen” translates to “human”, regarding the humanlike appearance of the creature itself. The creature is said to be nocturnal, most active at night, and have eyes and mouth but no other distinguishable facial features. Supposedly the creature ranges from 60-90 feet in length, has a blubbery body like a whale, is albino , and has a very humanlike form. Some eyewitnesses claim that the creature is actually relative in size to that of a human, possesses a mermaid-like tail, or has hand-like appendages. Others believe they have leg-like appendages which allow them to also walk on land, but these claims have never been proven. The creature was first discovered by a Japanese Research Vessel in the 1990’s. At first the crew believed that they had spotted a foreign submarine but soon realized that it was actually a living being. It is rumored that the crew aboard the ship were able to do extensive research and even shoot some photos and videos of the creature, however this information has never been released to the public. It is said that the research on the creature was never released due to government interference. These days it is rumored that the Japanese Government even monitors internet posts and removes anything related to the Ningen, strengthening the claim that the crews research may have been kept secret by the government. A more likely reason is that the crew, being professional researchers, did not want to make their research public and be mocked by the scientific community for being associated with a paranormal creature. But this has also never been proven. The Ningen first rose to popularity in 2007 after an article about the creature was released in a Japanese Magazine. The article also featured screenshots from Google Maps of a supposed Ningen swimming off the coast of Namibia. After the article’s release many witnesses came forward saying that they too had seen such a creature. Soon enough the internet was exploding with supposed sightings of the creature. Many believe that a lot of these photo and video sightings are too good to be true and that most, if not all of them, are just hoaxes. On a more serious note, if the Ningen actually exists and is not just legend, then we will always have very limited information on the creature, as we do now. This is due the creatures very remote location in the Arctic. The trip alone would be too costly, not to mention the amount of equipment and researches needed for such a task. Because of this we may never know if the Ningen is just a legend or an undiscovered species. Until we find out, stay curious my friends!👽
