I do think we're in the midst of a media literacy crisis but I attribute that more to the explosion of digital media, a broad devaluing of the arts, enshittification, the creep of capitalism on our work-life balance, and the rise of pseudo intellectual tastemakers and influencers. And yes, the covid lockdown certainly allowed these elements to proliferate and evolve at a higher rate, but all this was going on even before 2020. Covid did not magically make us all stupid and reactionary, we were heading this way already.

A myth always changes in the telling of it and Nolan has chosen to use a Greek base to tell an American myth. Nolan pulls big American film names and techniques to speak directly to an American audience.

At the heart of the film is “What if the foreign invaders we fear the ravages of are just… us?” While seeing the sacking of Troy, how can one not feel a connection to Gaza and Iran today, to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and others?

What horses did we use then? Which will we use in the future? What city will be sacked next at the American altar and what norms will we break to do it?

Much has been argued about the casting of the movie. It is obvious Nolan wanted names already large in the American movie mythos to reinforce this is about and for Americans, not Greeks. I found Damon and Holland’s presence most distracting and wish they had been new rather than known actors.

The most controversial casting seemed the most justified. Through the lens of American myth: A black woman as the most beautiful woman in the world is intentional and meaningful. A transman as the braver of two men, sacrificed by the deception of his leaders is intentional and meaningful.

Nolan also calls us to action with his myth—Illiberal norm-breakers who abuse tradition for their own benefit feast in American halls of power. Only we can right the wrongs we have done and seek repentance and healing. But it must be done by acknowledging and learning from what has passed.

Overall I’m not sure this movie connects its message to its audience as much as it strives to, but I do think it is a valiant effort. And I do think you should see this and watch it on the biggest screen possible, feel the roar of the flames and the crashing of the wine dark sea.

Further thoughts:

What makes myths endure is that they are always adapting. You have never experienced a version of The Odyssey that was not shaped by the people telling it. The telling & retelling is the most human part of mythmaking. What have we lost in the songs passed down from ancient times? What have we added?

Nolan’s version asks us this directly—both in what the characters say and in the Roman elements of the myth he includes. Can we exclude our shame in our storytelling? Does it service us to only sing our own praises even as we suffer for it?

If you want a strict retelling of The Odyssey on film, I have great news for you. That song has already been sung. Many times. You can stream it at home right now. But if you are an American and want a song of The Odyssey sung for you, like how Virgil sang it for the Romans, see Nolan’s The Odyssey.
