"It is not up to you whether your performance will be brilliant; all that is under your control is your intention. It is not under your control whether your career will be brilliant; all that is under your control is your intention" - - David Mamet
The actions of human beings are governed, more than anything else, by what they WANT, consciously or subconsciously
Uta Hagen from Respect For Acting
Jim Jarmusch - - American film director, screenwriter, actor, producer, editor, and composer
(in a nutshell, really!)
Sir Ian explains it all.
The actions of human beings are governed, more than anything else, by what they WANT - - consciously or subconsciously
Uta Hagen (Respect for Acting)
Your talent will get you your first gig, your attitude will get you hired again
Maggie Lally - - Professor of Theatre @ Adelphi University
Vowels
Only vowels carry emotion, not consonants. You can’t speak vowels without breath.
Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art"
Konstantin Stanislavsky
Failure is necessary.
Giving up is unforgivable.
Without an ego, you cannot stand on stage. You have to know you belong there
Isaac Stern (violinist)
Monologues for Auditions
They are a snapshot of what/who you are; truthful, clean, and decisive. Dropping “F-Bombs” is not cool. It is NOT about your range, either. Invest YOU into the text.
Lack of confidence is the heaviest anchor you can put on your creativity and your art
Lil’C (dancer and choreographer)
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great!
Mark Twain
TACTICS are employed as shades or colors that refine action (verb). ACTIONS shape their choices by defining the way in which an action is being attempted. VERBS are used for the action you take to achieve your objective, but ADVERBS (tactics) modify that action. TACTICS/ADVERBS give variety and specificity.
(Example: if the action (verb) is “to protect”, the tactic (adverb) might be to protect PATRIOTICALLY, to protect IN A FATHERLY WAY, to protect ROMANTICALLY, or to protect INEPTLY)
Theatre was not created to analyze a character
