Q: What would you say to young people or your friends that didn't think theatre was for them? A: (Girl on Left) If you actually just say down, it can be funny and there's a lot of drama. #PeopleattheTheatre Q: What would you say to a young person who didn't think theatre was for them? A: (Girl on Right) That’s ridiculous - it’s so fun! I mean, I’m a young person and I like going to the theatre because I just like watching stories. If you like movies, it’s just like a live-action movie! I'm originally from Queens, but currently living in Boston. Sometimes I volunteer at the theatres and I’m the youngest one there. Boston is a city of young people and I don’t see why more people don’t just go. I think it has an underrated theatre scene. I see a lot of plays that are really good and a lot of shows that were in Boston come to New York. Photo by Christa Tandana
#PeoplattheTheatre Q: What would you say to a young person who didn't think theatre was for them? A: (Girl on Right) It's just so amazing to see people do what they like! Just see one [show] and I'm sure you'll want to see all of them! Q: Why do you go to the theatre? A: (Girl on Right) I'm a singer and [when I go to the theatre], I'm learning about how to make it. I'm from France. Q: What differences do you see from theatre in France and here? A: (Girl on Right) There, it's more like business. And here, I feel like it's art first. A: (Girl on Left) She played Snow White in Paris! A: (Girl on Right) I came [and saw theatre in NYC] awhile ago and went back to Paris and wanted to act. It was exciting because it was a main part. #PeopleattheTheatre Q: Why do you go to the theatre? A: Entertainment, inspiration, new energy. Q: What would you say to a young person who didn't think theatre was for them? A: They have open their eyes to new ideas, new experiences. It's not just sort of didactic act of watching people on stage, but the full experience is interesting. Photo by Christa Tandana
#PeopleattheTheatre Q: Has there been a particular show that changed your life or perspective on something? A: (Guy on Right) I remember seeing 'Rent' when I was 15 in 1996 with the original cast. I was from a fairly conservative town in Canada and it just really changed my perceptions on the way people could live their lives. The other show was seeing De La Guarda a few years later on a visit here because if 'Rent' changed the perception of how people could live their lives, De La Guarda was theatre that could change your perception of what was real and what reality could be or was. Q: Why is theatre important? A: (Girl on Left) I’ve actually been thinking about this recently because I had been seeing some [terrible] theatre back home in Vancouver and I was starting to wonder if I just didn’t like theatre. So that made me think about what makes it real or why is it good. And I think the conclusion that I can come to right now is that the theatre that I resonate with really echoes where I'm at and makes me contemplate and reaffirm where I’m at in my life. #PeopleattheTheatre Q: Was there a show that you fell in love with? A: This is actually the first show that I ever saw. And I fell in love right away. I was actually in the 9th grade and my history teacher wanted to expose us youngin’s to theatre. It was a fantastic experience and it just totally opened up my eyes to a whole different world. I’ve actually acted on Off-Off Broadway because of it, so you never know! Photo by Christa Tandana
#PeopleattheTheatre Q: What would you say to a young person who thought that theatre wasn't for them? A: (Woman on Left) I'd say they're wrong! Going to the theatre is one of the most important things you could do as a kid. I grew up watching plays as a kid and it was a huge, important part of my childhood and I want it to be part of my kids’ childhoods. I think it informed who I was as a human being and continues to inform me as an adult and my appreciation of the arts has only been expanded by my experience. Q: Was there one show that changed your life? A: It was ‘Les Mis’! I grew up in Texas and when I was in high school and college, I was in a group of friends that was very theatre crazy. We had a lot of access to local theatre. When I finally got up here, this was the first show - you know, we all listened to the soundtrack; we sang it to each other - and this was the first show that I took my own money and bought a ticket to that was the thing I wanted to see the most.
