“At the Japan Figure Skating Championships you messed up a lift pretty bad. But I don't know. That performance stuck with me.” (Episode 5, season 1, Score 6, anime vs manga )
yodatsuka feat. endless white void
Just how many phones has Jun broken?
These manga caps are three pages apart and the progression is too fast that by that time, mostly everyone in the coaches’ circle knows that Tsukasa Akeuraji is a “huge fan” of Jun Yodaka’s, which greatly distresses Rioh Sonidori.
The Jun Yodaka in Tsukasa Akeruaji’s head. (A callback from Volume 6, Episode 5, season 2)
The student athletes and their coaches.
Apart from YodaTsuka and the gradual rise of Inori to be an Olympian/gold medalist and her hero worship/love/hate relationship toward the enigmatic Hikaru, another reason I adore “Medalist” is the way Tsukasa guide Inori not through what he likes but what Inori needs and how to achieve it.
There is an overlapping similarity between Tsukasa’s and Jun’s teachings: between perspective/marker and impulse. This reminds me of that manga cap where Jun carries Hikaru in his arms before he intends to teach her to skate.
Once again a parallel between the two of them.
Tsukasa in order to make Inori aim for the jump and not be frantic about it he asks her to describe the beauty of what she feels when she stands on ice, the atmosphere of the coldness surrounding her, the lights. This will make her see her purpose to jump, to skate.
Whereas Jun goes further with the raw idea of impulse, the reason he skates. It is way more visceral, not only embracing the aesthetics but also its ugliness. The brazenness of ice, its lack of emotions.
One can say that Tsukasa and Jun’s approach is almost the same but there lies a difference. That is, Tsukasa imparts that knowledge where he wants his athletes to find that happiness in skating. Jun, on the other hand, admonishes that the way he teaches skating won’t bring happiness to Hikaru. A paradox. Jun feels fulfilled when he skates and yet he also acknowledges that it doesn’t make him happy.
