hello to my new followers, here is the tldr on conor: lives in a cabin on the beach, lived there for his whole life. parents died in a car accident when he was young and then his uncle died two years later. felt like a huge burden and lived by himself after even though he was like fifteen. had no utilities because he put all his money towards keeping the cabin. made money by selling poetry and short stories. sold a short story to a big editor who took him under his wing. wrote a book inspired by his traumas and loneliness and it became a best seller. now he has a lot of money and doesn’t know what to do with it <3 still very sad

he never imagined the tales to be true — living on the ocean, he heard his fair share. but conor tended to be grounded in reality. after today? who knew. all he knew was that he was staring at a long, pink tail attached to a human body. mermaids couldn't be real. but there was @dollpink, lounging on some rocks right before his very eyes. maybe he was just tired. that must be it.

“ excuse me! hello. are you alright? ” pants are rolled up to his mid - calf, feet are bare as he crosses the array of flat rocks to reach her. he's pretending he can't see the very, very fishy tail attached to the beautiful woman. “ i didn't realize anyone else knew this spot. i hope i'm not disturbing you. ”

“ okay, you convinced me. ” conor sighs rather dramatically, laughing as he takes her hand in his, lacing their fingers together. “ but if i ride, you have to get some cotton candy too. deal? ”

I don’t really click with a lot of people. I struggle with that, actually. It’s familiar. I would say… in school, I definitely felt that feeling of isolation or whatever. But… people seem to like me. Everything, and… here, I don’t think that… people like me that much. I think i thought if i… moved here… I’d fit in better. I thought… I’d meet more like-minded people but that just hasn’t… I left Carricklea thinking I could have a different life. But… I hate it here and I can never go back. I can’t get that life back

there's a warmth that spills out towards him, fingers squeezing softly where they've wrapped around his arm, keeping them locked in close where her happiness is allowed to grow through her. it's easy to settle close to him, to let him lead her without much thought to which way they're going, living somewhere between the moment and a strange feeling of contentment that has wrapped around her ribs. "you know," words started like they're some kind of confession, a weight on her tongue and for a moment she isn't bubblegum and flowers but something deeper, something grounded and earthy, something she had tried to push away. "i don't know what i was doing before you spilled wine all down me, conor, but i'm really glad i have you now." but then it's all too serious, too heavy for a moment, before she is distracted by rows of cakes and the sweetness of caramelised something slipping into her nose.

it takes a while, a meticulous walk around the shop, back and forth, studying everything as if were the most important decision ever made, before she's ready to decide. her gaze lingers on the red velvet and she remembers birthdays back home, beth playing piano while meg tried to sing sweetly and jo's voice boomed loud and tuneless above them all. she turns back to him before the loneliness slips in, before it has space to bloom in her ribs and become something that will swallow her whole. "that one. and cupcakes but you're not buying them. i'm the one who descended on you and disrupted your whole day without a word of warning, so you really don't need to do that." he'll end up doing it anyway, she thinks, because he's never said no to her and she's starting to think she knows him inside - out, like there's something about their souls that entwines. it's a nice feeling, after all.

he remembers spilling that wine all over her — his first ever event, one where he was petrified out of his mind, unsure what to do. he felt like his heart was going to leap out of his throat. she was wearing white, of course. why wouldn't she be wearing white? he thought she would yell. he'd have accepted it, taken it in stride, then drowned it out with the sea when he returned home. instead, she was kind. but that's who she was, he'd come to find out. amy was kind. he was happy they kept running into each other — if not, who else would he be spending the day with?

" well, too bad. it's your birthday, so i'm buying. " he shrugs, taking note of the cupcakes in the case — meticulously decorated. he already foresees him taking pictures of her with one on the beach in front of his home, with the beginnings of the fire he'll build in the background. she'll be beautiful in it, as always. he approaches the counter, requesting the cupcakes amy wants and pays. he receives them back in a little white box, perfectly packed away, with some candles for her to blow out. " well, i foresee a nice bonfire and a glass of wine in our future. what do you say? "

there's no unkindness to her laughter when it falls, soft and warm as she looks to the man so hopelessly in love with her sister, watches him agonise over something that will no doubt he forgotten within a moment. there are moments like this when she knows that they will be fine, that they will keep living when her end comes, and someone will love her littlest sister the way she needs, and see under all the walls she has built around herself. it's gentle when she reaches to his hand, a soft squeeze from cold fingers before they retract back to herself. "if you know amy at all, then you'll know that there's almost nothing you could do that she won't forgive. that's the biggest of the secrets: if she loves you, she'll love you forever." reassurance delivered, she decides she shouldn't make the answer too easy, shouldn't let him think he doesn't have to try. "but some flowers wouldn't go amiss. and don't make the mistake of thinking she is ashamed of anything, she'll tell you everything when she's ready."

he's grateful for beth's warmth, and for the kindness she shows him when he's so reluctant to show it to himself. " flowers. got it. " connor grins, mind already racing with what to get her. roses? no, that might be too basic. sunflowers? you're the sun in my life, amy march. no, that's too mushy. maybe daffodils? he had time. " i think perhaps i'm just scared, you know? i've lost everyone i've ever cared for and i was so terrified i'd lost amy too . . . " cared for. loved, he wanted to say, but held his tongue. she was in love with fred, not him. he could say that he loved her, but he wonders if beth will see right through him in the way she previously has. the way conor loved amy extended beyond friendship. it was the care one had for a romantic partner, but he wasn't sure he was ready to share it with others yet. especially with how close her and fred were to an engagement. it would be cruel, he thinks. " thank you, by the way. you didn't have to help me, but you did. and i'm grateful for it. "

"  she  jokes back  at  him,  but  it  is  a  concern.  everyday  there  are  new faces. some  still  are  pilgrims,  but  more  and  more  they  are refugees. she  wonders  vaguely  which  the  man  in  front  of  her  is. " i  hope so,  too.  i'm  helena. "  she  answers  politely,  holding  out her  hand for  him  to  shake.
