This is a fictional interview with an interior design company whose client has recently renovated their company office.
The interview begins with interior design company, Mauve Design Co. discussing the inspiration behind one of their clients Print & Graphics newly renovated medium two-story office space. The organization has been located in this particular facility for over two years, Marceau Demetr, head over company.
I thought long and hard about the arrangement of space. I asked myself the question such as, is it a good thing to have an open floorplan? I imagined having all of my one hundred plus employees sitting under this one, rather large open area. The acoustics, noise level and amount of privacy are all factors that I took into consideration when trying to envision how to structure the floorplan.
What were some of the pro’s and con’s of using the floorplan, and how did implementing the designs increase comfortability and increase productivity levels? Then theirs the issue of insulation.
I wanted the space to flow, I believe that even though we decided to maintain the open floorplan we still managed to arrange the space in coordination with the room. We I said before, we have even temperature throughout, you can install recommended heating systems that are automatically designed to evenly distributed heat, but it begins with the types of building material that you use.
Which type of building material did you use when designing your office space, in order to make it more cost and energy efficient?
Designer: We recognize that its our responsibility to take care of our environment, and I am cost contentious. Actually the use of the metal during the construction helped also controls the regulation of heat throughout the office building space.
Okay so when designing you have to consider the light placement. As you know you can totally transform the whole room by using the placement method, how did you come up with the design concept for this building?
I wanted to do something different, I saw a similar design displayed in a design magazine. The inclusion of more natural light helps, tall windows, plenty of windows really I wanted to keep the ceiling open, metal cross beams in specific areas closed ceilings and all types lighting fixtures throughout. Marceau points to a certain section of the ceiling, see the incorporation of the long cylinder wood beams and cylinder light fixtures. The design scheme just made sense to me.
Now about your design choices. I see a lot of color throughout, how did you come up with style inspiration? Let’s start at the main floor, the pods, cubicles and offices.
I’ll begin with the individual office pods. After speaking with (office owner) requested the steel multi colored and wooden pods are the elevator design, which mimics the look of an elevator. They’re perfect for our clients work setting, of course the employee has sitting and standing room, a high counter space which easily could include a bar tool or swivel chair. The larger prototype upstairs can fit up to six people, but normally one or two people will be working or meeting there at any given time.
One of the deciding factors in choosing to go with the brand Steelcase, was the simplicity, yet thoughtful consideration placed into the design their office furniture. The client stipulated that his team wanted a way to keep the office layout open but would allow our supervisors their own private office space to hold meetings or take calls. The Snapcab Pods were then placed throughout the floor and back walls according to the arrangement of the floor space, another great feature is that these pods are portable, although although we do keep them stationery.
Okay yeah, I see that the larger IRYS pods are enclosed, which offers privacy. What other features does these private office have that outweigh traditional Individual space?
There are a total of eight offices downstairs and six located upstairs and the beautiful thing about these offices are that they offer the complete office experience, power sockets, lighting, consistent air flow, yet they are portable whenever you decide to switch the floor around.
Interviewer: About how much do these pods, and cubicles cost? In case our viewers are thinking about placing them in their offices?
Designer: The average starting costs of the Steelcase pods begin in the upper eight thousands. The desks that are arranged are also the same company and opted to add
color, as opposed to keeping everything one color. Our lounge chairs, in the reception area, the company break room, the long benches located throughout the office. Even though they have an expansive collection of office furniture collection. The owners goal was to have the office’s interior reflect the personality of the company.
I wanted to talk a little more about your interior design choices. I see that art plays a major role in how you design.
Yes, our client wanted color included throughout the facility. Our design team didn’t want to add color to just the walls, so we came up with and in certain neighborhoods, you’ll see murals of all kinds. It gave me the idea to create murals for the office walls. I think it’s a pleasant surprise to walk through the office and almost every corner there is a different mural. Actually some of the artists came in and hand painted their artwork.
We walk through a series of hallways, to the media room, which is lodged between the elevator and a smaller open layout of office desks, employees buzzing around taking calls and .
This is what we call the ‘showroom,’ a lot of printing and finalizations go on up here. So we have our employee’s desks situated where they can effortlessly reach one another during collaborations. There are some Steelcase elevator pods over there, we also chose multi-colored counter chairs. We included desks from the same company and more colored chairs, high back tall of every kind of make model.
We enter into the media room.
This is our office media room, it’s about 800 sqft which is absolutely a relaxing environment for our employees. We thought to add a wide screen plasma HGTV and comfortable yet modern furniture, in case they would like to read or listen to music. A full kitchen, and dining area. We also hold parties, celebrations, and meetings in here, although we do have a separate meeting room.
The restrooms, of course, are done in marble and limestone, one of the things I like about the restrooms are even though they are commercial bathrooms, they were designed to resemble the restrooms in that of a home.
