In all honesty, project 4 was a bit of a struggle for me. I’m not the best when it comes to graphic design and the Illustrator program, and knowing this, I wanted to make sure that my concept was something I truly agreed with. When developing my concept, I knew I wanted it to be about Earth sustainability, but I know that many of the designs for this idea often look similar and I wanted mine to stand out. The type “More Than Trees” refers to the idea that while many conservation projects revolve around the idea of saving the trees, there is way more to planet that is worth saving. The earth is capable of creating such pure and beautiful forms without the interference of mankind, hence the quartz and gems. The earth is a complex planet that holds levels and levels of the unknown and it’s important to keep that alive. Whether we as the human race discover all that there is to our planet or not, we must keep what we already have thriving. It really is our only home. Wearing the shirt, we become a vessel for this information that needs to be spread, we are the ones responsible. I learned through historical propaganda that getting the viewer’s attention was the most important so I wanted my own poster to be bright and attention grabbing, especially with the neon colors that are almost annoying to our vision. The poster works as a cultural object through it’s message, especially because sustainability and conservation have become such controversial issues of today. It also works as artistic expression through the aesthetics and colors of my choosing. I believe my poster conveys the message of protecting more than the trees of Earth, because like humans, it’s made up of so many more complex systems. Rocks, which take years to make through intense pressure and all the right materials, are a creation of the Earth itself and we must respect what the planet can do for us.
