'Dante and Virgil in Hell'
by W. A. Bouguereau
Illustrations from Dante’s The Divine Comedy by Franz von Bayros (1921)
Gustave Dore (1832-1883) was one of the most celebrated book illustrators and engravers of all time. His fantastical, dream like works are familiar to anyone who has read an illustrated copy of Dante's Inferno. His depictions of Heaven and Hell and all their denizens have become part of the modern consciousness of these realms.
This painting was done for me by the Australian artist Sara Riches Hall and is titled "The Demon King". The painting masterfully captures a sense of dread and longing.
This painting by Felician Rops, from between 1878-1881 is titled "The Librarian" and continues an ongoing theme by the artist of the corruption of innocence.
Perhaps one of Goya's most well known and celebrated works, "Saturn Devouring His Son". Painted on the wall of his home, this is a interpretation of the Greek myth of the Titan Cronus who was purported to have eaten his children fearing a prophecy that one of them would someday overthrow him.
One of Goya's late works 1797-1798. "The Witches Sabbath" is representative of the work of Goya's that I first discovered almost 20 years ago and still find fascinating.
Largely unknown and uncelebrated in his own time, Belgian born artist Felician Rops was often dismissed as a mere pornographer.
