Recently the City re-launched the program under the name, Public Art San Antonio (or PASA), established a new Public Art Board, and completed a comprehensive public art master plan to guide future initiatives and improvements.

"ALGORITHM" Works by David Berrones

PLAZMO contemporary is proud to present a new exhibition by David Berrones. Berrones presents a series of works that reflect a specific understanding of the world as strange and disjointed. Berrones refers to Algorithm as,”a fragmented and mediated experience of the world around us”. Created are appropriated visual narratives shaped by interest in historical symbolisms and popular icons, as well as outsider art and Rock music. In the stream-of-consciousness storytelling inspired by dreams and rooted in real life experiences, ideas of loneliness, relationships, vice, life, death, self-destructive behavior and humanities idiosyncrasies are explored. Algorithm examines the subversive force of images cut with a hint of antics and the macabre. Influenced by Conceptualism, Pop-Art and Surrealism, we see references to Rauschenberg, Warhol, Banksy and Dali. Berrones employs and stresses the subconscious, exploiting chance effects and unexpected juxtapositions. He states, “I am fascinated by what happens when you bring disparate images together and create new unexpected meanings.” Our world itself being sinister and silly, is now madly reconfigured and shown with an undertow heavy with cynicism. Algorithm integrates appropriation with original elements in the form of collage, creating a fresh and new Pop-inflected, dialectic visual experience. David Berrones is a Laredo based artist and local H.S. Art teacher. He attended United H.S., Laredo Community College and received a BFA in Studio Art from Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi with an Emphasis in Painting and Sculpture. Over the last few years, he has experimented with various media and now commands his creative talent and artistic style. Berrones’ work focuses on narrated parts of intrinsic human nature, as well as the labour intensive process required of this work.

MoMA CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS! In conjunction with the exhibitions Inventing Abstraction, 1910–1925 and Abstract Generation: Now in Print, PopRally invites you to channel your own ideas of the abstract through video! Create a one-minute video exploring abstract forms of any kind, then follow the directions below to upload it to our dedicated Vimeo group. Use a camera, use your phone, or use an app. The videos will be played on various screens and projections in MoMA's lobby and on the Marron Atrium walls during a special party on Sunday, April 7. Dream Pop queen Tamaryn will DJ the event, providing a hypnotic soundtrack to the collectively built abstract videoscape. 2013 Winner New Americano: Latinitas Founders: Laura Donnelly Gonzalez and Alicia Rascon

Laura Donnelly Gonzalez and Alicia Rascon are two University of Texas grads that transformed a class project into the powerful nonprofit and online magazine, Latinitas. Since 2009, Laura and Alicia have empowered young Latinas with programs, the most contemporary Web 2.0 platforms, open source software, and social media opportunities for self-expression. As founders of the only agency/publication of its kind, they have engaged 1,000 student bloggers to MyLatinitas.com and trained 20,000 elementary, middle and high school Latinas as reporters, bloggers, vloggers, and pod-casters whose voices bring to life the New Americana.

San Antonio and Los Angeles are cities that with all their romanticizations are still cities that seemingly purport rigid dichotomies in their histories. The change of demographics allows for the discovery and rediscovery of their own rich culture as seen through new eyes when placed in the context of exhibitions like the McNay Museum's Estampas de la Raza. The tie between the two cities becomes evident in many of the exhibitions featured artists originating from San Antonio and Los Angeles. Further drawing the connection, many of the prints exhibited were produced in the print studios of Self Help Graphics & Art and Modern Multiples, both based in Los Angeles. LA-SA is the first exhibition of new and current works from some of San Antonio's and Los Angeles' finest artists with an emphasis on the artists variety of different styles, mediums and techniques. LA-SA features eight artists, six of which are artists brought together by Estampas de la Raza. While prints are an important part of the artist repertoire, for most of the artists featured in LA-SA, with the exception of Sonia Romero's sophisticated prints, the print is not the artist's primary means of expression. LA-SA gives the participating artists a forum to exhibit works in their primary mediums while allowing other artists to exhibit more experimental works. Alex Rubio and Jaime Zacarias' highly detailed paintings along with the unique paintings of César Martinez will sit aside Vincent Valdez’s Burn and Recuerdo films. The films will be shown simultaneously for the first time as the artist originally intended. Oscar Magallanes' work on wood is an example of highly stylized and advanced stenciling techniques. Also it was important to augment the exhibition with San Antonio artist, David “Shek” Vega, who works primarily with aerosol and Los Angeles artist, Hacer, whose impressive works are primarily large scale origami metal sculptures. These artists not only complete the circle of mediums represented but also in representing the ground breaking work being produced by San Antonio and Los Angeles artists.
