whether their expression is one of confusion, frustration or interest fushi isn’t excactly aware of. perhaps all three might be the case as their yellow eyes are completely locked on the contents within the invisible glass surface of the strange container. whatever ‘it’ is, the container strikes no recollection within their mind, but the items within appear to be some form of edibles. there has been so many new things to learn in this world of the future, and fushi barely even knew where to start.
upon regaining consciousness, the only proof of times changed was their own aged body and the scenery that had changed around them. they had quickly regained their youthful vigour by moving their consciousness elsewhere in order to explore this new realm and what it could offer them. an old man’s body was hard to move around in, and they had to be absolutely sure that there was no harm left in the world before they could bring their comrades back.
before letting them lose, their creator had granted them the ability to redo a severed connection and thus making it easier to reconnect to their network of roots – travelling was an unlimited phenomenon now, and they just had to make a body where ever they willed to appear in that place. such was how they had found themself in a city even bigger than renril. was this the main capital of this new world? it seemed unbelievably huge no matter how they looked at it.
one lesson already learned the hard way was that transportation in this era seemed to be faster and more dangerous than what it used to be. no horses were needed to move the steel carriages. obviously it had only hurt for mere moments before they had moved on to their next endeavour, this contraption that was currently in the way of them getting hold of unknown food.
“machine?” they mirrored the words of a helpful passerby linking eyes with her for a moment before returning their gaze to the contraption. so this was called a ‘machine’, was it? her words carried with them more information and fushi quickly put the pieces together. “i see!” they exclaimed happily. “so you have to pay this “machine” to get things to not be stuck? you should have said so sooner!” with those words fushi clenched their fist to create a coin and held it out towards the machine. “here you go!”
It’s a little strange that the other seems to have no idea how a vending machine works, but Shizuka is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they come from a country where they’re not all that common. (Though she struggles to think of such a place, surely vending machines are a worldwide phenomenon?)
At their excited tone, Shizuka feels herself smiling a little, even if the ‘you should have said so sooner’ comment rankles a little. She pays it no heed and nods in affirmation.
“Right! It’s just like buying something from a shop, but the vending machine is the clerk instead of a person! So you just have to--”
Words trail off as the other offers a coin to the machine; not the manner of how they were trying to pay for whatever they wanted from it disturbing her, but in how they got the money out of seemingly nowhere. Admittedly, after all she’s seen since Battle City, Shizuka can’t say she’s shocked at seeing magic being performed in front of her.
Instead, it’s anxiety and dread that fills her stomach, she thought she’d left this nonsense behind when she’d returned to Yonezato!
Still, she keeps a smile pasted to her lips, even though she thinks it must look strained (it feels like it is) and finally releases Fushi’s shoulder to instead stand beside them, closer to the coin slot and item menu and gestures to them.
“Ah, not quite like that! You have to put the money into this slot here, see? Then you tell the machine what you want by pressing one of the buttons. It’ll give you whatever it is then, and if there’s money left over, it’ll give that back too!”
