What do I say if someone finds out that I row, and then they ask if I canoe or kayak?

I usually tell them that I do the kind of rowing jack does in the opening scene of jack ryan and they usually get it. If that doesn’t work, there isn’t anything I can do to describe it bc it doesn’t make sense

hey so i’m going in hs next year and i want to participate in rowing, but i’m also taking orchestra, three honours classes, french, kind of unstable, and i kind of really value the time i have to just sit in bed and do nothing. do you think that’s too much to take on in hs or?? and please don’t respond like “you’ll be selling your soul to us so” bc i’m actually rlly stressing over this

sorry this is so late! anyway, rowing is a really serious commitment, there’s no way around it. It is tiring and exhausting, but just as most athletics are, rewarding. In my personal experience, rowing taught me how to manage my time and increased my general mood so I actually began to do better in my classes and even managed to hold down a job. However, that’s not the case for everyone, so I think there’s a lot to be said about giving it a try. If it doesn’t work out, there’s no shame in dropping it. High school is the time to try everything!

the season just ended for my highschool team and I don't know what to do anymore. on the bus ride back from our last regatta I all the sudden got a really sore throat and I still haven't recovered so I can't work out on my one weakness, cardio, because everytime i walk too fast i start coughing up a lung. it feels like my life is over what am i supposed to do. I MISS THE BOAT.

You gotta take the time off, chill, relax. Its hard and it SUCKS to just be waiting around, but recovery is important. My best advice is to listen to your doctor, and use this setback as motivation once you can get back into the swing of things

hey i’m a novice coxswain but i’m not short at all. i’m almost 5’6 and i’m worried it will make my coach think of me as a worse choice/not as much potential. i weigh around 100 lbs so i’m not very heavy but i’m just worried because i can’t really change my height. do u have any advice for making your coach think you’re worth it even if you’re above average in a bad way?

coxswains come in all heights (as long as you make weight, youre good! I’ve seen some seriously gangly coxswains with knees to their jaws in the boat!) Honestly, the only way to prove yourself to your coach is the same way any other coxswain needs to; be a leader, be confident, and steer a good course.

Any advice for a 30 minute test? The group of novices that I'm in has one coming up, I have no idea what to expect. The closest we've gotten to that time length is a 3x10 min piece with 3 min rests and a 20 min followed by a 10 min with 5 min rest in between.

Omg this is really late but changing rates really helps me, like I'll start out at a 24-26 and build up every ten minutes and then sprint the last five

I've been rowing for over 6 years but I haven't been on the water since November 2015 bc of an inoperable knee injury. I used be qualifying boats for finals& going to nats all through my junior rowing career but my collegiate career has been lackluster partly bc of my injury and partly bc of the team. Im at such a lost bc i feel so out of shape (I still work out just no where near my previous 10k avg weekly distance)&I miss rowing but my team is kind of shit (both ppl&ability wise). Any advice?

Sorry this is late, I've been catching back up with school. My advice is to actually probably find another sport/activity to cross train in. If you can't get the proper support from your team, there are definitely other places that can give it in addition to catering to your knee so that you can get the conditioning to kick it back into high gear

It's only my fifth week on my team lmao and we just started feathering and I'm so bad,,it's so painful. My first regatta is Saturday and I feel so unprepared and I'm afraid I'm bringing down my team :/ I'll definitely keep on with it I'm not quitting but the feeling of not getting it just isn't fun

Keep the blade light and balanced in your fingertips, and don't grasp the par too tightly. Feathering can be rough, but once you get it, rowing on the square will be your least favorite thing. Don't worry, these things take time.

Because of shitty administration changes at my school a lot of people on our team quit (and I joined just this semester) so I've ended up on a team of only varsity men as a novice girl which is fine because I love them but also like for erg workouts and tests they're times are drastically different from mine and it makes me so intimidated! Not to mention on the water technique we'll practice in a mixed 8 and I'm the only one fucking up 😓 what should I do??

What you do is keep going! Yeah, it feels shitty now, because of the sheer experience difference, but you'll learn faster with them than being in a boat with less experienced rowers. It's all a process, think of it as a learning opportunity.

I just started rowing (as in Ive only been to two practices so far) and I know this week we'll have a 2k test. during the test should I just be focused on speed? my technique isn't HORRIBLE but I have to think about it while I'm erging. is the goal just to go as fast as possible?

For your first 2k just keep it long and strong. You don't want to send your stroke rate flying too high because your form will quickly deteriorate and it'll just be painful. If this is your first 2k, aim for a 28 stroke rate and focus on the rhythm of the erg.

so I'm the new president of my rowing crew, and I live in the house that a few crew members live in. we have mice, so I've decided we need a crew cat. name is either gonna be "Coxie" if it's a girl or "Mr. Pocock" if it's a boy. But I also think "Waynuff" would be a cute name. thoughts?
