A man from Cosmopolis perishes in a flood
Authorities said the body of a 72-year-old Cosmopolis man was discovered on Saturday, Jan. 8, about a day after the vehicle he was attempting to move was swept away by fast-rising flood waters near his home.
Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office and Grays Harbor County Fire Protection District 15 firefighters found Delbert Pratt inside his submerged vehicle about 100 yards west of his driveway around 9 a.m. Saturday. A tow truck later removed the vehicle from the water.
"Investigators believe the vehicle was swept off the driveway by fast-moving floodwaters and quickly submerged in deep water," Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Brad Johansson said in a statement. "Mr. Pratt's family has been notified of this tragic event." Mr. Pratt's family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers."
Pratt went missing around 5:46 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, from the 700 block of North River Road in Cosmopolis, after going outside to move his vehicle to higher ground.
"When he didn't return, his wife dialed 911," Johansson said in a statement. "Due to flooding on North River Road, law enforcement was unable to reach the location." North River Road flooded both before and after Mr. Pratt's house."
On Friday, District 15 firefighters and family members searched the area but were unable to locate Pratt. Personnel from the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office and the Pacific County Sheriff's Office, as well as their drone, arrived later Friday to search the area but were unable to locate Pratt or his vehicle.
His death was the first to be blamed on the flooding that wreaked havoc in Grays Harbor County this week. Floodwaters were pushed up by the area's record rainfall, as well as snowmelt and high tides.
The National Weather Service in Seattle reported 5.78 inches of rain in Hoquiam on Thursday, Jan. 7. Hoquiam had its wettest day on record with that total. According to National Weather Service data, Aberdeen received a similar amount of rain.
