i’m 45 years old and i can assure you confidently that back in ‘my day’ we did NOT all chat merrily with our seatmates on the bus

people on public transport were as tired and/or obnoxious back then as they are today, and i WISH i could’ve been texting my friends on the way to work in 1990, and i woulda if i coulda

instead we listened to non-rechargable battery powered walkmans and read the newspaper and pretended we didn’t notice the guy next to us leaning in all night train burps and tobacco teeth to ask for a dollar

and unlike you, we didn’t have a way to call the cops if he followed us off the bus

what i’m saying is the mobile phone is a beautiful thing and people who whine about you using it in public are just losers who want attention

Also, re: kids on school buses/kids in general:

My mum drove a school bus in 1983 (back when her region allowed goddamn 16-year-olds to drive buses because they had no gd sense) and has always talked about the rowdy as hell kids on those buses. They only learned to shut the fuck up upon request after she screamed at them to shut up one day while stopped at a train crossing, bc she couldn’t even hear herself think let alone hear if anything was coming, and before the last word left her mouth a train was right up on them.

Anyone who says kids were different “in their day” is full of horseshit. 70-year-old white Americans complaining about kids these days ignore how they/their cohorts threw things at and otherwise threatened their fellow children for daring to integrate. I mean. Goddamn.
