BattleTech Art: More Wayback Machine

I’m working on some scripts for a series of short videos for Harebrained Schemes coming BattleTech Kickstarter (just over 7 days until it launches!!!). I previously showcased some amazing old-school art that I dug up, and here are some more.

First up, the original BattleForce box set published in 1987, illustration by Steve Venters. Never cared for the game itself, but the the art was amazing (and ultimately the concept of “large-scale” play would live through a variety of rules sets, including into the latest Interstellar Operations Beta).

Here’s the AeroTech box, published in 1986, illustration by Jim Holloway; I remember a ton of fun with the gravity-on-the-map rules. 

Finally we’ve got the Chaos March sourcebook published in 1995, by Les Dorscheid.

KIRK THIS WHY YOU GOTTA FILL OUT THE LOG

I’ve heard the theory that Kirk’s logs just get circulated round headquarters for lulz before being dumped in the circular file as obvious fabrications by someone bored with a frontier posting. “Hey, have you seen this one? He says he fought Apollo.” “What, the old earth probe?” “Try the old earth GOD!” “Hilarious! Classic Kirk! That’s better than the time when he was transported to an evil dimenison.” The reason why in The Naked Now it was Riker who remembered that the previous polywater infection had happened is that he’s the sort of person who would read The Hilarious Adventures of Captain Kirk for fun.

I especially like this idea because of the implication that all the other captains in Starfleet are reporting perfectly ordinary experiences like visiting a space station, dropping off supplies at a colony, bit of a stand-off with some Klingons in disputed space but got out of it unscathed - and then there’s Kirk all, “sorry guys we’ve been off course this week because my first officer seriously needed to get laid (LIKE YOU HAVE NO IDEA MY NECK STILL HURTS)” and “let me tell you about the Chicago Gangster planet” and “WHIPPED AND THROWN IN JAIL BY SPACE NAZIS.”

And look! MORE Marauders.

BattleTech has had some great announcements the last few months. Catalyst began in July show-casing our re-imagined Warhammer.

Then the great crew at Harebrained Schemes up-notch-kicked that something fierce with the news they would shortly launch a Kickstarter for a turn-based PC BattleTech game.

Then Monday Piranha Games joined the deluge in style, posting up a pre-order for their re-imagine Marauder for MechWarrior Online.

Well, Piranha showed us theirs, so only fair we show them ours…this final line drawing of our re-imagined Marauder just came in this morning and as usual, immediately sharing.

As I’m working on scripts for some short videos to go along with HBS BattleTech Kickstarter, watching this re-imagined artwork flowing in for our coming Combat Manuals (and other books), and salivating at the idea of playing a Warhammer in MechWarrior Online…what a great time to be a BattleTech fan.

Next few years are gonna be one amazing ride!
