Calcifer Star. Falling Star turned Fire Demon turned Human. Sure.

“I guess it would be.” She smiled. If even a former star didn’t know how big the universe really was, then no one did. “Everything does. Even the universe will die someday. Or collapse, or something.” She hummed thoughtfully as she skipped ahead on the sidewalk, heading for Sherwood. She’d been in the forest a lot of times, but it was big enough and wild enough that it was still a mystery to her. “I wonder if there’s a way to unlock your old powers.” She grinned as she turned around, walking backwards. “I think I’d make a pretty great dragon. Then we could still be friends.”

Calcifer snorted, looking up at the sky, “I mean, this universe could collapse yes. But there are so many others. Really this world hasn’t explored to their true potential. On this planet or dealing with others. Or even other universes.” A part of them wish they could actually show Dorothy the power of the stars, or at least his fire demon form. Show just how magical things are beyond this world. But they felt like she got the gist based on their words alone which was satisfying. For now. “If there is a way I would love to take a chance on it” They admitted, “No matter how dangerous.” They huffed, shaking their head, “What you talking about? I would still be friends to you, dragon or not. Although, dragons can be pretty cool.” They were deliberately not looking at Dorothy while they spoke, almost looking like they were pouting. She compliments them all the time, of course they will stay friends.

She knew that the class didn’t affect her major, and she probably didn’t have to work so hard in it, but she was really fascinated by the subject.  Clearly that interest was obvious, since Calcifer even picked up on it.  “Oh I’m always stressing about my classes.  Pretty sure all college students do,” she replied, laughing dryly.  “Thank you for the extension.  Hopefully it’ll be worth it with the extra time.”  She would be putting her best work into the assignment, but that didn’t mean it would be the best he’d ever read.

“Doing something that stresses you out seems pretty ridiculous.” Calcifer huffed, though they are aware that many in this world, without magic, kind of have to deal with stress if they want to get anywhere. They suppose that Howl had to deal with something similar, sometimes feeling the heart they were holding getting some pangs. But once the heart was back to their friend they never worried about stress. Until now. “I am not stressed or worried about your paper. You seem to actually read the material and have an interest in the subject which will help you in the long run.”

“I, um, was hoping to talk to you about the paper due next week,” she repeated, biting the corner of her lip as she took a step further into their office.  “I’ve been spending a lot of time working on it, and it’s getting there, but I was wondering if you could give me a few extra days to finish it?  I want to hand in something I’m proud of, and I feel like I won’t be able to do that by the due date.”

“Ah. Angel, yeah?” Calcifer looked at the girl with a raised eyebrow, acting indifferent and giving a shrug. “Sure.” Dropping their feet to the ground, they gave Angel their full attention, “Honestly I am willing to give you a few days since you have shown a great interest in the subject with it just being an elective. Everything good? Not stressing about your other classes, yeah?”

“Stars dance while they’re in space?” Her eyes brightened. Dorothy might not admit that she sometimes loved lovely things as much as creepy ones, but that was unexpectedly beautiful. “I guess that makes sense… Stars live for so much longer than people,” she mused. She was trying to imagine it. She had a good imagination, but she also knew that she was barely coming close to what it must have been like for them, if she was coming close at all. “If you could be anything now, what would you be?” They reached the outdoors, and she did a little spin, breathing deeply in the crisp fall air. It was a textbook autumn day. People started stories with days like this.

“The ones I knew did. Still trying to figure out if that was the case for all of us” Calcifer chuckled, “It is a big place, living among the stars.” Though they didn’t necessarily miss it, mostly because they were already falling. About to head to a death when they were found by Howl. “Yeah... Though even stars have an end.” They chuckled, watching Dorothy do a little spin, replying to her question almost immediately, “A fire demon. If I was back into my original form, even in some capacity, I would be downright amazing.” And terrifying, as they didn’t necessarily have a form as a fire demon, though they often took on a humanoid shape for the sake of practicality. “You?”

“Well, the first in Fableton. They’ve had Jitterbugs in Oz forever. They make you dance until you’re so tired you fall down.” She smiled though because only Calcifer would want to go on adventure with her to find something that might not even be there–and still fully believe in its existence, whether they found it or not. “Aren’t stars surrounded by cold in space?” she laughed. “Could you not feel it because you were burning too hot?”

“Certainly sounds like exhausting creatures.” Calcifer frowned, pretty sure that they never came across something like Jitterbugs but as a fire demon, former star, there is a lot that wouldn’t cross their path. Or used to. “Perhaps but I do not recall ever being bothered by the cold, was dancing around far too much. Like your Jitterbug.” They mused, shrugging, “And at any rate, most of my current memories are that of a fire demon and, well, now a human.” Those memories were more... Solid. If they were honest, the memories of being a star were vague, mostly due to how much time passed, and centuries could seem like a blink of an eye in most cases. “A memory when I was a star might be something that occur for years and years instead of just a small moment” They admitted to Dorothy, at the very least, “So cold wasn’t entirely something I truly felt till I fell.”

“Probably no one has. There might not even be any.” She shrugged. She’d never seen any outside of Oz, but plenty of things had come to Fableton from there. Even if they didn’t find jitterbugs, she thought they’d probably stumble across something interesting in the woods. “No, that sounds boring. I’d rather go adventuring. It’s not going to be nice out for much longer, and then we’ll be stuck inside.”

“Well that would make us the first and that could be an amazing discovery.” Honestly it wouldn’t surprise Calcifer if there were some kind of bugs that weren’t natural to the area. More than half of this town are not originally from Fableton so it isn’t that much of a stretch that their presence, with all the hints of magic, can alter the area. It seemed like an interesting question to bring up to Howl when they see him next. “Ugh. You mean the cold” They scowled, “I despise the cold.”

“Yay!” She clapped her hands together. That was the answer she wanted. She would have stuck around to keep them company in their office, but it was better that they didn’t have to. She hitched her bag up on her shoulder and started off down the hallway when they returned. “I don’t know. We could go in the woods and look for jitterbugs.” She didn’t really have a plan, but that wasn’t surprising because Dorothy never had a plan.

Calcifer paused, nodding in thought at her suggestion. “I’ve never really done that before” They admitted, “But hey, anything beats staying on campus.” They glanced over at Dorothy, remembering that she enjoyed being around the school. “Unless you are wanting to go sit in on a lecture or go to the library... I say let’s go to the woods and look for bugs.”

Dorothy was waiting, and she pinged another M&M at them when they peered around the door. “Hey, Calcifer,” she laughed, offering them the bag as a peace offering. “Being bored is the worst,” she agreed, scrunching her nose. “Are you stuck here, or do you want to go wandering?” If they had office hours or something, she could keep them company. Otherwise, she preferred to see if there was any trouble they could get into elsewhere.

Calcifer took the bag, popping an M&M into their mouth almost immediately. “I am never stuck anywhere Dorothy” They chuckled, “Not anymore. Let’s go wandering.” Quickly, they moved back into their office, grabbing their keys and meeting Dorothy at the door. Closing and locking up their office, they ate another M&M before looking at her curiously, “Now. What are you thinking about getting up to?”

Dorothy was more familiar with the university campus than someone who wasn’t a student likely should have been. The more time she spent there, the more she thought it was something she might like to try for real. She was sure her friends would support it if she told them, but she had trouble asking for things she wanted. For most of her life, she’d been the only person she could count on.

She peered into Calcifer’s office, but they were very clearly absorbed in a book. She didn’t normally interrupt people who were reading (unless it was to ask what book it was), but she’d come there just to see them. She’d been chewing her way through a bag of peanut butter M&Ms on her way, and she pinged one at them before ducking out of sight around the door.

A small smirk appeared on their lips as Calcifer closed the book with a loud snap, tossing it onto their desk. Standing up, they quietly move to stand right next to their door. They stayed silent for just a moment before leaning to look around the doorframe. “Well hello there” They let out a small laugh at the sight of Dorothy, “Looks like you just came in time to save me from boredom, my dear.” It has been awhile since they have seen the young brunette, and they weren’t going to admit it but it was nice to see her.

“I’m sorry, did you say something?” Calcifer asked, looking away from their book to the newcomer that was standing in front of their office doorway. They finished up grading most of the papers and decided to take a break. For like an hour. Leaning back in their chair, with their feet up on the desk, they definitely looked at the new person with a raised eyebrow.

Shock leaned against the wall of a mausoleum sucking on a lollipop while paging through a magazine. “What a strange thing to want to be buried with?” She mused aloud. 

“What strange thing?” Calcifer tried to look over Shock’s shoulder to read the magazine, “Cause if you say it’s strange then it is probably a high level of strange.”

“Good to know he’s not responsible then.” She nodded. She didn’t really think she would ever get to the bottom of that mystery, but it was hard to ignore it sometimes. It was strange how they’d all ended up in the same place and had such odd rules to follow. “Have you ever come across someone who did have that kind of power? I don’t think the Queen of Hearts did. Unless stealing it from Wonderland had side effects outside of our world.”

Calcifer paused in thought before shaking their head, “Not to the extent of being able to reach out and pull various people from other worlds and put them here without their knowledge or true consent. Something like this would take a lot of magic. Because not only would you have to do the act but then to add the barrier that keeps us from leaving would be another intense act of magic, given how many do have some abilities.”

“It takes more than American alcohol to make me lose my lunch, zvyozdochka,” she chuckled and shook her head at him but turned to watch the bartender pour their shots. “What else have you learned here?”

“I’m sorry I don’t speak gibberish” Calcifer replied, “What the hell did you just say?” They took the shot, shaking their head, “I’ve learned that people are so touchy about things sometimes. I don’t know how one can interact with people around here without someone getting sensitive.”

Her eyebrow lifted slightly, “I won’t ask, but if you ever feel like telling me about it, I’ll listen.” She shrugged, knowing she wouldn’t really pry because it certainly wasn’t her place. Elsa gave them a long look before sighing and giving in, “Alright, fine.”

“It’s a long story” Calcifer pointed out, “Full of magic and wizards being rather dramatic as well as a witch placing a curse on a girl.” They shrugged because really, the story of how Sophie got entangled with them and Howl was rather ridiculous. And a bit long, involving the two of them being oblivious. “Excellent. You want to just eat here now? I don’t know where your capacity of people is.”

She hummed thoughtfully. Magic wasn’t really her area of expertise. “So you’re saying it’s possible, but not likely. Would your Howl be able to accidentally open up doors from a lot of worlds and bring people here?”

“Not without me to be part of the spell, I don’t think” Calcifer hummed thoughtfully, “You would need the proper components and a lot of power to open a door to a different area. That’s just a small opening, we are not even talking about the power that you need to actually bring people from one place to another. Even if he was successful in doing that... He would be seriously weak for days. Weeks. Months. There is always consequences and hidden rules when there comes to magic.”

“Yeah, it was a pretty weird place.” She nodded, not offended. Wonderland had been strange even before she had something else to compare it to. “Really? Is that how you got here?”

“Well that is what I assumed” Calcifer huffed, “I figured that he got involved with some weird spell or magic and completely through us into a different part of the world as well as altered my appearance. Which is a first but I wouldn’t put it past him. But that normally doesn’t stop my own abilities from happening.”

“Well I don’t know a thing about dolls, despite being an over-sized one,” she pointed out with a shake of her head. “But at least you can do something with what you were.” She wasn’t even phased at the idea of talking to a star, or a former star. 

“Hmm. You might know more than you realize. Not about dolls in general but maybe something along those lines.” They shrugged, “I dunno if it is really a good something. You can’t exactly talk about the stars as if they were real beings here. And them falling and becoming a fire demon is a rather one time only case.”
