Happy Birthday Lindy Booth

nightmarejack:
Objectively, Jack could see that he and his ex-wife hadn’t been a good match from the beginning, and that his reasons for getting married in the first place hadn’t been ideal. He also knew himself well enough to recognize that he lacked some of the basic characteristics necessary to being a good husband, but Sally wasn’t walking into this blind. She was as familiar with his faults as he was, and she didn’t usually have trouble telling him when he was being an asshole.
He tipped his head gently into that touch, brushing a soft kiss to her thumb. “Preferably forever,” he agreed, his smile widening slightly. “We’ll work on that.” There was no point in pretending otherwise anymore. His feelings weren’t casual, and he didn’t see them changing any time soon. He was in no rush to try the marriage thing again, but he didn’t need to be married to Sally to be committed to her.
.
Sally had questioned his marriage from the beginning, but it had been far from her place to say anything against it. She’d questioned it, had hated it, but she had always thought it was purely selfish of her. A good husband was different to everyone, she thought, but she knew it would take time to change his opinion on himself when it came to that, if she ever could.
Her heart skipped at that soft kiss, her mind still reeling slightly that this was real and not a hallucination. “We have forever to work on it,” she teased lightly, laughter in her voice as she looked at him. She didn’t need a marriage. She just needed Jack, and she knew that he wouldn’t go anywhere now. Before, yes, she’d worried about him disappearing like a puff of smoke if he’d decided to. Now? She knew him well enough to know he stayed his course once he picked it, for better or worse.
nightmarejack·:
Jack’s objection to being with Sally had never been because he found her a nuisance. On the contrary, she was probably his favorite person. He just worried that she would trip and cut herself on his edges too many times, and the relationship would go the way of his marriage. He’d already destroyed one woman. He really didn’t want to see if he could make it a habit. But they were past the point where resisting would do anything but hurt both of them.
“I want to be with you, under whatever terms you find acceptable.” His thumb brushed lightly over her knuckles, his gaze flicking from the road to her and back. “But I hope those are exclusive and long-term,” he admitted, that crooked smile quirking one side of his mouth. He didn’t think he could stand to see her with someone else, but relationships weren’t about ownership either. “What do you want, Sally? You’re going to have to tell me, probably often.” God knew he wasn’t any good at guessing or reading people in general, but he didn’t worry about that overmuch. Sally didn’t usually have a problem speaking her mind to him, whether he wanted to hear it or not.
.
Sally had been silently at Jack’s back and at his side for years, even through his marriage. She raged at the fact that he put the blame for his marriage’s failure purely on his own shoulders. She had a lot to say on that subject but she knew he wouldn’t really hear it. He wasn’t the only one with edges, at least his were blatant. Hers were sharp little barbs that pricked when they were least expected. It was both a help and a horror.
She loved that slight little smile of his and she reached across with her other hand to stroke her thumb across the corner of his lips. “I want you, Jack, entirely. Exclusively. Long-term,” her voice was soft and she currently hated that they were in a moving car. It made her feel a little braver about her next admission, as soft as it came out. “Preferably forever, but hey, I’ll take what I can have.”

The best place to find Victor was usually the hospital morgue, although why someone outside of work would be looking for him was anybody’s guess. He was barely civil to his colleagues and always with that patented blend of condescension and disdain, and it wasn’t clear how he’d managed to make or keep the friends he had. Gomez, Jack, and Victor had simply always been in one another’s orbit, their mutual strangeness enough to bond them for life, and he didn’t feel the need for many more connections outside of those.
The body on the table was covered by a cloth in case anyone else happened to wander in. He’d never been bothered by death, even as a child. In fact, one could argue that Victor found people far more interesting after they were dead than when they were alive. He had a series of toxicology tests running, and he didn’t look up when he heard the swish of the door. He didn’t expect the results to be interesting, but Victor was nothing if not meticulous. “I’ll be with you momentarily. And for the love of god, don’t touch anything.” It was less a request than a cool command, given by someone who was used to being obeyed.
.
It was painful to pull herself out of that bubble she had created with Jack. She had known that it was temporary, that their families would have to be told. His didn’t worry her, his siblings always a soft spot for her. Hers was a different story altogether. She had also known that it wasn’t a conversation she was coward enough to let Jack have, but that she wasn’t brave enough to have at home. Finding Victor was always easy, she just had to go to the morgue.
She rolled her eyes, “I’ll just set this sample down right on this table then.” Her voice was flat, a warning sign to anyone else but one she knew would be ignored by him. It wouldn’t matter that she didn’t have anything with her, just the idea of it was likely to bother him. She settled herself primly on a stool, tucking her skirt smoothly under her to wait.
nightmarejack·:
Jack definitely had some reassessing to do when it came to his understanding of Sally and her family. He’d always been around for it, but obviously he hadn’t understood everything he’d seen, and that wasn’t such a stretch. He wasn’t the most observant person when it came to relationships or human interaction in general. There were plenty of reasons he spent most of his life holed up in a lab. He wouldn’t swear that Victor had soft feelings for anyone, even a family member. He’d always had the impression that if it suited his friend better to watch him die, he would. Jack wasn’t sure what it said about him that this didn’t trouble him, other than that he hoped to never be at Victor’s mercy.
He chuckled softly because he more than deserved that comment. They were in perfect agreement that their families didn’t get to interfere. He was pretty sure there would be no actual objections though. Victor didn’t care enough to do more than make snide comments, and his siblings would probably be overjoyed. He was reasonably certain they liked Sally more than they liked him, which was fair. “What is the truth, Sally? One night with you would never be enough for me, and I don’t think I’m very good at sharing.” He laced their fingers together, letting them rest gently in his lap. After he’d kept her waiting for so long, he’d settle for just about any terms she wanted, but Jack didn’t do casual feelings. Last night certainly hadn’t felt casual to him.
.
There was a lot about her family life she didn’t expect Jack to understand. Being physically present for some of it didn’t really mean much. The Skellington household had always been a whirlwind of equations and hypotheses, experiments and adjustments. It really didn’t lend itself to anyone seeing what went on amidst the family dynamic when there was no work in the picture.
Her thumb slid softly along the side of his hand at the soft laugh, enjoying the sound of it. She had a feeling that Victor and her father would both be pleased at the idea of her no longer being a nuisance under their roof, even if they wouldn’t be pleased at the idea of Jack stooping to being with her. “It’s not enough for me, either,” she assured him. “I don’t want you to share, Jack.” The words were soft and she turned slightly in her seat to look at him. “What do you want this to be?”
nightmarejack·:
Sally could square off against him and win, so he had no doubt she could hold her own against anyone she chose. He was also familiar with the very specific ways that families didn’t play fair, and Victor in particular wasn’t known for his fairness. He always took the most efficient route even if it was brutal. In a scientist and a friend, Jack appreciated the quality, but he could see how it wouldn’t be ideal in a brother.
She’d always mattered, far more than he was willing to admit to himself until now. He tipped his head gently into her hand and tried not to allow himself to be distracted by it. Not killing them both in a fiery car wreck was high on his agenda today. When they’d reached the highway and settled into cruise, he took her hand, brushing a soft kiss over the knuckles. “What do you want to tell our families? About this.” It wasn’t going to stay secret for long with the trick or treaters always in his business, and Jack didn’t want that anyway. Sally wasn’t something he felt the need to hide.
.
There was an incredibly key difference between Jack and Victor. Jack cared what she thought, what she had to say, thought something of her when it came to her chosen field of work. Victor didn’t care about her, any part of her, not really. She was a pawn to be utilized when it suited him, or a piece to be controlled when it suited him. She had the unfortunate softness to think of him as a brother more than he thought of her as a sister.
Feeling him tip his head brought a soft smile to her lips and she purposely didn’t chase after more off those soft reactions. There was no stopping that soft bloom of warmth when he kissed her hand. “The truth,” she said simply, looking over at him. “You finally came to your senses and none of them get a say in it.” Her family thought she was a doll, pliant and movable to their demands. They had always missed that core of steel she could have when she needed it.
nightmarejack:
It wasn’t usually worth it to get into an argument with Victor. He was as stubbornly set in his ways as Jack could be, and there was simply no upside to engaging. He might have to make an exception when it came to Sally though, some rusted version of chivalry still embedded so deep in him he’d almost forgotten it.
“Then I won’t,” he murmured, that possessive shadow flitting behind his eyes. He knew it about himself, and it wasn’t one of his finer qualities, but it had its uses. He was perfectly happy to make Sally his problem, probably forever since Jack didn’t really do things by halves. He’d let himself give in to wanting her, and he didn’t see that going away any time soon. He started the car once they were settled and got on the road to the city.
.
Sally didn’t need anyone to fight her familial battles for her, such as they were. It didn’t mean she wouldn’t appreciate Jack standing at her side when she faced them down over her choices. She wasn’t sure just how much different things were going to be now, the sides of him that she was going to be introduced to.
That possessive flicker didn’t bother her in the least. Instead, it sent a soft flicker of heat down her spine, knowing she mattered that much. As they settled in the car, she couldn’t help but reach over to slide a hand through his hair before curling it around the back of his neck. Her thumb slid back and forth along the line of his neck.

Jack had no plans to hide this from anyone, but he could admit to the appeal of keeping it to themselves a little longer. One day without Victor’s snide comments and chilly silences and his siblings’ sarcasm and nosiness didn’t seem like a lot to ask for. “If you let me steal you away, I might not give you back.” He laced his fingers with hers, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand, and tugged her gently toward the car.
.
Sally in no way looked forward to the derision her relationship with Jack was going to be met with by Victor. He’d say that Jack could do better, but at least Sally wasn’t his problem anymore. Her father would likely think similar. It wasn’t a train of thought she wanted to chase down, not when she finally felt happiness bubbling up in her chest.
Her breath caught lightly and she gave him a soft, sweet smile, her fingers squeezing gently. “What if I said I didn’t want you to?” The question was soft as she went with the tug to the car, her eyes lingering on him, gauging his reaction. She thought she’d be far happier never being let far from Jack than anywhere else.

“You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful, and then you actually talk to them, and five minutes later they’re dull as a brick. But then there’s other people, and you meet them and you think ‘not bad, they’re okay’, and then you get to know them, and their face sort of becomes them, like their personality’s written all over it, and they just they turn into something so beautiful…”
nightmarejack·:
He wouldn’t have suggested anything he didn’t want to do, but it sounded like a nice way to spend the day when she lined it all up like that. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been on a picnic, but otherwise those were fairly normal things for them to do on a day off. “A perfect plan,” he agreed, smiling. “Now the only question is do you want to stay in town or go into the city?”
.
His question made Sally pause and give it serious thought. Both options had their merits and their drawbacks. “Let’s go into the city,” she decided, as it wasn’t something she did very often. It also allowed them a day of relative privacy from relatives and busybodies. Just because they had to deal with them eventually, didn’t mean it had to be today.

Her eyes closed as she pressed into his hand, enjoying the feeling of his fingers in her hair. She didn’t think she could ever not want that particular sensation if it was an option for her to have. She tipped her head back and forth as though pondering, even though she knew it was true. “That would be a very sad thing,” she agreed with a small huff of laughter, “As I rather like where we are.” she brushed her lips lightly over his jaw and smiled against his skin lightly.
Sally quirked an eyebrow and leaned back just enough so he could see her face. “I might be a ragdoll, but I’m not a pushover,” her voice was pointed as she looked at him. “I’ll push at you and I’m sure you’ll do the same to me if it’s needed.” Now, she smiled, slow and dark and pleased, “I have to agree with you on that one.”
.
“Good. We both know where we stand.” He smiled back, darkness filling his eyes. For possibly the first time, he was fully appreciating that Sally had a dark side of her own. It let him know that she’d enjoyed the fighting as much as he had this time, and though he wasn’t in a rush to repeat that part, it was reassuring for when it inevitably happened again. They’d found a way to address their issues that actually seemed to work for them and didn’t end in hurt feelings and mutual avoidance. He leaned forward to kiss her again, enjoying the fact that he could. He didn’t have to pretend he didn’t want her more than he’d ever wanted anyone.
nightmarejack·:
He slid his hand into hers as they stepped off the porch, not sure if they were walking or driving yet since they hadn’t made any concrete plans. He’d had time while he was dressing to think of some options, but he was open to anything. It had been a long time since he’d been on a date. He’d rather work than make polite small talk with someone he had no interest in, but the prospect didn’t sound arduous when it was with Sally. In part, they’d skipped all the most tedious parts of dating because they were already friends with common interests. “A museum, a library, a picnic. All three. Whatever you like. Did you have something in mind?”
Sally beamed at the ideas presented to her, delighted by all of them. She gave it all fo the consideration necessary because it was all beautifully tempting. “Museum, then picnic, then finish at the library because if I go, I’m leaving with books, and that way we don’t have to haul them around all day.” She smiled with a little laugh, knowing it was true.
nightmarejack·:
“I like it that way.” He flashed a quick grin. Stitches and insanity was their old world in a nutshell. Even if he lived out the rest of his life in this town as a human, it would always be home. What he really felt as Sally eased back into his arms was lucky, and grateful, that was so willing to forgive him for being, well, him. He wasn’t sure exactly what he’d done to earn her affection–he’d probably never understand that–but he’d try to be worthy of keeping it.
“Because it wasn’t true,” he said gently, brushing a hand through her hair. As irritating as he’d found it for her to call him on his bullshit, she’d always been able to see right through him. “And what if you had? We might not be here.” He wasn’t at all sure this was the best thing for her. Far from it, in fact, but he’d accepted it was what they both wanted. But if she had taken him at his word and moved on, they wouldn’t have even had a chance. “I think I’m going to need you to push back at me, Sally. And if all of our fights end like this, I’ll consider it well worth it.”
.
Her eyes closed as she pressed into his hand, enjoying the feeling of his fingers in her hair. She didn’t think she could ever not want that particular sensation if it was an option for her to have. She tipped her head back and forth as though pondering, even though she knew it was true. “That would be a very sad thing,” she agreed with a small huff of laughter, “As I rather like where we are.” she brushed her lips lightly over his jaw and smiled against his skin lightly.

nightmarejack·:
If they’d been planning to stay in, he’d have been happy to commence with further rumpling. But a part of him wanted to see what this looked like out in the world as well, before their families got involved. And knowing their families, that time would be very short indeed. He was a little surprised none of his siblings had wandered in already, and he had a brief moment to worry about what they were up to. Quiet in the Skellington household was rarely a good sign.
He reluctantly let her go and went back upstairs to shower. He usually did slacks and button-ups for work, but he went more casual for this in a thin black sweater and nice jeans. He didn’t want to feel like he was at work, and the occasion didn’t seem to call for anything fancier. He knocked after precisely half an hour and hoped that it was Sally who answered the door. This wasn’t a secret, and the inquisition would inevitably come, but he didn’t want it interfering with their plans. He smiled back when he saw her, stepping inside and wrapping his arms around her. He lifted her briefly off her feet in a kiss, not caring if he was acting like a teenager. “Let’s go before anyone asks us any questions,” he laughed quietly, setting her back down and finding her hand.
.
Sally would never hide Jack in her life or what they now were to one another. That didn’t mean she wanted to ruin their first day out together with any of her family sticking their nose in it. Her arms curled around his neck and she laughed into the kiss as she felt her feet leave the ground. Butterflies took over and she couldn’t help the smile and warmth she felt. “Definitely,” she agreed, slipping her hand into his and pulling the door shut behind her.
She stepped close up to his side as they moved and she tipped her head up to look at him. “So, what shall we spend our day doing?” They had already left the confines of their respective houses and were staying away from work, which was certainly a step in a positive direction.
nightmarejack·:
“Yes. That does make me wonder about your sanity,” he said with a wry smile. He didn’t think he was an awful person, but he was fairly sure he wasn’t a good person either. Not good like Sally. And good for her? Probably not. But he was past trying to make that decision for her now. They both knew what they were getting into.
It was a small relief when she took back the space she’d put between them, and he wrapped his free arm around her, settling her in closer. He kissed her shoulder, her jaw. “I’m sorry I’ve given you so many reasons to doubt how I feel about you. But I promise you, I want this, Sally.” He tipped his head to meet her kiss. He had a guess on who had been tampering with his magic, but he’d prefer to confirm it before he shared it with her. She was mad enough already.
.
She chuckled, the sound a little dark and shook her head at him. “Don’t poke too much at it, it’s stitched together,” she teased, though it was true in a way. She wondered how to make him understand that even good people weren’t good all the time. At least they were at the point of no longer making decisions for the other without their permission or desire, and she could handle a lot. But she didn’t really feel like she was going to have to, not with him.
Sally sighed softly, her fingers tangling in his hair to hold him close. She hadn’t been fair to him, in a lot of ways, prodding at him because she had never been able to shake him. It was hardly his fault. “I know you do,” she murmured against his lips before pulling back from the kiss just slightly. “And you didn’t do that. You... you tried to keep yourself separate and not tell me at all. I understand your reasoning. Disagree, but understand. I’m the one who couldn’t just accept it. And I’m sorry,” she dropped her head slightly, feeling some of that same old shame she’d battled often.
nightmarejack·:
Jack had done the whole courtship thing in the past, but a part of himself had always felt removed from it. He’d loved his ex-wife, of course, but he’d married mostly because it was expected. It was no great surprise to him when it fell apart. He’d simply drifted further into his own ways and put up more walls to isolate himself. He’d never expected someone to try to navigate them, but he was trying not to make it more difficult for Sally than it had to be.
It helped that there was nowhere else he wanted to be right now. “I wouldn’t mind a shower,” he admitted with a chuckle. “I’ll be at your door in half an hour?” If she needed longer, he could wait, but he’d never known Sally to spend forever on her appearance. She always looked lovely, even when they were both ragged from working late.
.
Sally couldn’t help but laugh and nod in agreement, “A shower sounds wonderful.” A shower, a change of clothes, a hairbrush, all things she definitely could use in that moment. She didn’t mind being rumpled by him, far from it actually, but if they were going to go out in public, she wanted to be more presentable. “Half an hour,” she agreed, giving him a soft kiss before stepping away because she didn’t trust herself with any more than that.
She slipped out of his front door and across the street to her family’s home, listening for a moment before slipping through the front door. She froze as she heard muttering from her father’s lab, relaxing when it faded away again and dashing up the stairs. She didn’t want to ruin her happy mood by seeing her father or her brother today. It was quick work to take a shower and blow dry her hair, slipping into a dark purple skirt with a black and white striped blouse and her favorite black heels. She stopped in the kitchen on her way down to turn on a pot on low, setting an easy soup to cook so her normal routine was in place for the most part. When she heard the door, she brightened and went to catch it, acknowledging her father’s bellows for her to answer the door. “I’ve got it,” she called out as she opened it, a happy smile on her face.
nightmarejack·:
“The worst parts.” Jack could think of many. His carelessness, his recklessness, the parts that often didn’t consider consequences or other people’s feelings. That was to say nothing of the enemies he’d brought from Halloweentown. There had been no sign of Oogie Boogie lately, but that didn’t mean the overgrown bug wasn’t lurking out of sight somewhere. They’d all seemed like good reasons for a long time.
“I’m not sure I did,” he admitted, keeping her hand pressed to his face beneath his. “Perhaps logic and feeling were on the same side, for once. I don’t think it’s irrational for us to be together.” If he did, he wouldn’t be here. There were a lot of reasons he and Sally made sense, and it was something they both wanted. He could tell that the admission had hurt her though. It was only a surprise that it had happened so swiftly. He hadn’t even lasted a day without hurting her feelings. “I’m not happy about that either. But I’m not sorry about where we are now.”
.
“I’ve seen those parts,” she reminded him gently, nothing but acceptance in her voice and on her face. In no way did she idolize him, or think him perfect. “You’re not perfect, Jack, but you’re far from awful.” That was the case with anybody, really, with plenty of wiggle room. She really didn’t like hearing him think there was something so terrible about himself that he needed to keep her from getting too close.
Her brow furrowed lightly, but her fingers brushed lightly under his as though she could drink in every bit of his skin she could touch. “That’s a nice thought,” she admitted, “It’s not irrational, not at all. I’m glad to hear you think the same way.” She shifted herself, wrapped in sheets and little else to slide into his lap, curling her other arm around his neck while leaving her other hand in its place on his face. “I’m not sorry about it, and I don’t think I ever can be,” she sighed, her body relaxing as she let the anger go for the moment. “But I still don’t like anyone messing with you,” she warned him, leaning forward to kiss him.
