So excited!!!
Cottle Coffee at Damansara Uptown
Attended a coffee and food tasting yesterday at the newly opened Cottle Coffee.
Had a cup of flat white and their pulled beef sandwich to start of with. I’ve never found a pulled beef sandwich in Malaysia which was up to par till now. At first glance, I was expecting the usual dry meat on a hard piece of bread. I was pleasantly surprised as I bit into the sandwich that the bread was soft and warm, the pulled beef was well flavoured and moist and to top it off, there were slices of homemade pickled cucumbers tucked between the pulled beef. That tangy pickle paired with the slightly salty pulled beef was a party in my mouth. For RM16, the sandwich comes along with your choice of a side salad (there was grilled corn, pumpkin and quinoa). I chose the basil and grilled corn salad. It tasted very well seasoned and you could taste the basil in the corn.
After washing that down with a cup of flat white, which was very smooth and didn’t require any sugar, I had a taste of the cakes. Chocolate mousse pie, peanut butter banana chocolate (very peanut-y) and a durian sponge.
A must try is their Australian style iced coffee with ice cream! The coffee was nice and strong but after stirring in the ice cream it was a refreshing milky iced coffee.
We mustn’t forget the resident kitty staying at the cafe, Monday is her name. So don’t forget to say hi and give her a scratch when you stop by.
Summary: will be back for more pulled beef sandwich and coffee!

Brunch & Munch at G Village, Desa Pandan
Yesterday, after an early breakfast at Tommy Le Baker (review coming up next) and about 2.5 hours of watching The Hunger Games : Mockingjay Part 2, we were feeling hungy at 4pm after attending an event at G Village.
We decided to get a bite at Brunch & Munch on the Ground Floor. The restaurant was pretty empty as it was that odd hour to have lunch between tea time and dinner.
I was pleasantly surprised to see a ‘munch’ menu which was perfect for the hour that we were in. Pretty much nibbles-mode. I wanted to eat but not so much that I’d be full before another dinner appointment at 7pm.
We ordered the baby ribs and the eggs benedict. We were advised to order an extra serving of eggs at RM4- as the dish only comes with one portion of eggs. For drinks, an iced latte and a flat white.
They offer “Ponto Alerge” blend specially roasted by RGB Coffee. However I did feel that my flat white tasted rather watered down. I must say I didn’t really care for the coffee there.
The eggs benedict came served on a light weight wooden serving board. The grilled tomatoes which came with it was to me the star of the dish. Though it maybe just tomatoes, they were well seasoned with salt and pepper and tasted really delicious.
The poached eggs were well cooked to the correct amount of runny consistency atop sautéed spinach and a charcoal muffin which only tasted of egg yolk once drenched in it. I wish they had seasoned the spinach a little more or if the hollandaise sauce had more flavour. Overall a rather bland benedict which had to be accompanied with the tomatoes to save it, which was odd as the bacon was not salty enough to complement the dish. The side salad came with a normal olive oil and balsamic dressing so there’s nothing much to say about that.
I only had a taste of the baby ribs but I did think that taste wise it was more well balanced in flavour compared to my dish.
Summary: I don't mind coming back for the food but I might opt for tea the next time.

Hamasho (浜笑) at Desa Sri Hartamas
Last Friday we decided to wait out the after office hour traffic jam by having our dinner at Hamasho. Having been recommended this Japanese restaurant by 2 Japanese friends previously, we were very excited.
The moment we walked into the restaurant, we couldn’t help but feel that we walked through a door that transported us to Japan.
Feeling famished, we ordered barbecued Hokkaido scallop, barbecued shiitake mushrooms from Kyoto, clam soup, pari pari cabbage (raw cabbage with dip), grilled Saba fish, buttered potatoes & mentaiko onigiri.
The every dish tasted fresh and well seasoned. The scallop was big. The shiitake mushrooms were juicy. The clam soup had a sweet taste with huge juicy clams. We thought the potatoes tasted like the ones we had in Sapporo. The only thing that we felt wasn’t up to our standard was the grilled Saba fish (probably won’t be ordering that again).
Whilst I was still contemplating on whether to order dessert, we noticed a couple who just walked in. It so happened that a friend of ours had decided to eat at the same restaurant that day. So we shifted to their table and I ordered my dessert to share. Grilled sweet potatoes topped with homemade soybean (kinako) ice cream.
All in all, It was a very satisfying meal. Although the portions were rather large, we somehow managed to finish everything but the cabbage.
Summary: A tad pricey but worth the quality. I always hate paying exhorbitant prices for bad food. However, we will definitely come back when we have our Japan withdrawal syndrome.

Bro'fee at Alam Damai
Passed by this new cafe the other day and decided to try it out for dinner tonight.
As we walked in, we were greeted by a spacious interior with warm lighting and an inviting seating area. It’s always nice to visit a restaurant which knows how to use wood for that warm, comfy feeling.
I couldn’t help but think of the ‘How I Met Your Mother’ TV series when I saw the name of the cafe. We were told that the reason behind the name of the cafe is because it is operated by 2 brothers and their signature coffee is also called Bro'fee.
We ordered a hot and a cold Bro'fee, a popcorn chicken salad, cheese on toast and a breakfast platter (because, why not?).
The cheese on toast was good but it would’ve been nice with some soup. Hopefully they will incorporate that into the menu some day. Hint hint.
The popcorn chicken was tom yum flavoured and had an appropriate amount of dressing (I hate it when restaurants drench salad in dressing). The generous portion of boiled eggs tasted good with the salad.
The coffee was really good. It was just the perfect blend of milk and coffee for a caffe au lait. A very smooth taste which was enjoyable from start to end.
Summary: We will definitely be back for more Bro'fee.

Brunch at Breadfruits, Taman Desa
We decided to try the new Breadfruits branch at Taman Desa, which is closer to home.
We were pleasantly surprised that there wasn’t a long queue to greet us. The seating area was spacious and filled with sunlight.
We ordered the baked breakfast (bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and eggs with 2 slices of sourdough) and the tomato, cheese and mushroom bruschetta. For drinks, a hot latte and pomegranate and mandarin orange juice with honey.
I’m happy to say that the quality and taste is as good as the main branch in Desa Sri Hartamas.

So after all the hype about this Salt and Lemon Candy on fb, I’ve finally managed to see and taste it. There was a whole bowl of it at one of my current favourite restaurants - Koyaku at Taman Desa. It was just sitting there nonchalantly by the cashier.
I exclaimed :“Wow! This is that famous candy that everybody is talking about on fb!” and the cashier lady couldn’t help but smile. Yeah, I admit I’m very outdated when it comes to hard candy and also Korean series (I’ve only just learnt that there’s like a series called Running Man).
So I took one from the bowl and immediately unwrapped it and popped it into my mouth. I must admit that the first taste that hit me was washing detergent, but as I rolled it around in my mouth more, that familiar taste of lemonade came. Then it was kinda like that moment when you put salt in Coke but instead of that, it was salt in lemonade. You get the idea.
So is it worth the hype? I don’t think I’d go on a crazy frenzy trying to buy some on Amazon but if I happen to come across it again somewhere or at Koyaku again, I wouldn’t mind popping one in my mouth.
The best chinese style nasi lemak (coconut rice with curry chicken) is from the morning market near my house.
The uncle selling it always gives generous portions of cabbage and long beans.
What I love the most is the curry chicken as it is cooked to the right amount of curry taste mixed with a bit of this tangy acidic taste to it.
The next best thing about this nasi lemak is the potato, which I’m guessing is the holland potato as it doesn’t have that powdery texture but a slight crunch to it when it is cooked ¾ instead of well done.
I’ve been having this for breakfast on weekends ever since I can remember and the taste and quality is still kept to perfection.
Summary: a tad pricey but worth the money and certainly worth the wait ( the queue is usually long and food sells out within 2 hours. If you’re a lazy sleeper, don’t bother.

Curled up into a ball
I’m sad to say that my first food posting is not a good one. Today we had dinner at Aoyama The Green Room restaurant at Desa Seri Hartamas.
I had the tempura set and my hubby had the salmon steak set. We ordered an extra salmon ginger maki (highly recommended by the waiter as his opinion was since we both were having rice sets, we should order a rice-less maki).
I started with the barely lukewarm miso soup which had little miso in it. The rice was not exactly the prime of Japanese sticky rice which I’ve had, but was better than a Japanese restaurant I went to in London which actually served, to my horror, American Long Grain rice.
The tempura batter was heavy as opposed to light and airy with just the right amount of crispy-ness. I would rather have had the tempura last week at Sushi Zanmai, a Japanese chain restaurant.
The preserved ginger 「がり」taste was overpowering for the salmon ginger maki. It would have been better suited with rice.
The only thing which saved my meal was the chawanmushi 「茶碗蒸し」which only arrived halfway through the meal and had a good flavour and decent texture without it being too raw with the egg taste and the fruits which did not taste like they were pre-cut and left in the fridge.
Summary: Ban-listed
