Scars#1
James F. Rogers Christ. My ribs feel like someone played whack-a-mole on them. I grab my chest to try to stop the shifting of my broken rib. I would have gone to the hospital but my wounds will heal by the time I wake up in the morning. Plus, I am only fifteen so they would have called my parents. I open the door to our house slowly and try to walk quietly into the kitchen. I open the fridge and grab a bottle of water and when I close it, I notice Tatiana leaving her bedroom and walking towards me. I close the fridge slowly and try to walk to my room. "James?" I hear her voice call as I turn around to face her. "T, go back to sleep." I say as I try to not be so obvious about my pain so that she won't worry. She just looks at me for a moment and a look of recognition crosses her face as she steps closer to me. "You went out again." It's not a question and it definitely isn't her trying to sound disappointed. It is a statement... She's used to it. She caught on to my late night excursions a little over a year ago, when the serum in my blood started becoming more apparent with puberty. After I noticed that I had my father's abilities, I started going on these patrols with Mr. Murdock. He's been teaching me to fight ever since I told him about how my mother wouldn't teach me anything other than Russian. I hang around his apartment for about an hour everyday after school, and sometimes he has me do odd jobs for him so that no one questions a teenager hanging around a blind guy. And yeah, I know that it's pretty weird for me to hang out with my mom's ex boyfriend as much as I do, but Mr. Murdock is a cool guy. Plus, he's been back with Electra for like three years so I know that he is not trying to get to mom through me or anything like that. The pain in my side snaps me back to the present as I can hear and feel my bones starting to shift in their correct place. "Go to sleep, T. You have school tomorrow." She fixes me with a look that is so mom, I almost feel intimidated. Almost. She is still a twelve year old girl and I am a fifteen year old super soldier. Because yeah, for some reason, they can't find a trace of the serum in her blood. I think that it's there and they just don't see it, but as long as she is not trying to play superhero and she's safe... I don't care. And yes, I do know that that is extremely hypocritical of me but whatever. She's my baby sister and I'll be damned if someone ever hurts her in anyway at all. She is still looking at me with a semi-glare on her face so I raise my hands in an act of surrender. "Just... Go back to bed T. I will be fine by morning, like always." She looks at me and then shakes her head. "You may be stronger and faster than most humans, but you know what? You are still human and you can die. Just because you have those abilities doesn't mean you owe anybody anything... Good night, James." She grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge as well before heading back to her room. I'm left staring at an empty hallway as I hear her door close and see her room light turn on. Sigh She doesn't get it. I can't just sit around knowing that I could help people but I just don't. My life means nothing against the hundreds I could save. Thousands even. With great power, comes great... Wait. That's not my line.
